Probably one of the most overrated dishes ever.

I’ve tried probably 10 different versions and they’re all extremely meh. The cornbread on the side is always the best part of this meal.

Point me in the direction of the absolute best red beans and rice and I’ll go to it.

It's not gumbo good but a well seasoned batch is very good.

Well you need to try my husband's red beans. His are delicious. I don't really care for anyone else's.

I grew up hating my mom's red beans.

OP clearly hasn't tried Natchitoches slop-style.

I hated RBR growing up. Chimes changed that when I was in college. Elsie's are definitely the best I've ever had. Deep-colored and extremely thick. Douse with hot sauce.. perfect.

it definitely can be if you dont know how to cook it the right way.

some of it can be just plain boring and blah

it all depends on the cook but the biggest mistake is not cooking it with a big meaty ham bone or something similar to infuse it with a really good flavor

In on 1st page!

Creamy, smoky and meaty, nice trinity, good gravy, properly cooked rice, all in a big bowl with MD's buttered cornbread.

Heaven in a bowl

I pity you.

This is the question.

Are you comparing to a high end bone in ribeye or green beans from a can?

No question. It's a side item people eat as a meal.
