My wife and I are heading up there from Sept. 9-12th and staying near Central Park. We've got reservations for Tavern on the Green one night but I wanted to hear the FD Board's rec's for some other places maybe off the beaten path. Ideally, the price range will be middle of the road and not too expensive but I know that's all relative because of the city we are visiting.

If you go to Chelsea market, get some tacos. Cheap and quick eats

I am not sure why you would go to Tavern on the Green unless you enjoy just lighting money on fire. Place is a tourist trap of the highest order.

More Expensive but Worth It:

Same. Great space, but the food isn't all that. As to your request, for that area I love going to Barney Greengrass for breakfast/brunch. One of those only in New York places. I like the sturgeon & salmon scrambled with eggs & onion, bialy & cream cheese. It makes me happy!

wife and i went back in march, here are a few items that i loved
if you go to smorgasburg, hit up Jian Bing, chinese crepes seriously excellent snack
if you're in chelsea market, hit up Very Fresh Noodles. the hand-pulled noodles were fantastic
Prince Street Pizza - spicy spring extra crispy
i had other pics but can't seem to find any of them now.

for Ramen, i'd hit up either Ippudo or Ichiran, Ichiran is on the pricier side

I’d recommend them for sure, but kind of out of the way for a tourist.
Forget Tavern on the Green.

The lamb burger at The Breslin is really good and for dinner they make Scotch eggs.. but they'll make one for you for lunch.
Eataly is on 5th Avenue at 24th Street.. It's an Italian food mecca where you can stroll around and take your pic of which area you want to dine in: Pasta, chacuterie, pizza, fish, desserts.. all magnificent and I highly recommend it.
Tao is an Asian restaurant and a very cool place to check out.
Gotham Bar and Grill is a chic New York restaurant that's also a quintessential New York experience. Delicious food and wine with excellent service.
Waverly Inn is a great place for brunch. Very hip place for drinks and star searching.
The Spotted Pig is in the West Village and the food is very good. Love the gnudi, which is goat's milk ricotta dumplings.. Yum
If you're venturing down to Chinatown, Joe's Shanghai has excellent sour dumplings.
If you're near Central Park, have lunch and a drink at The Boat House in Central Park
Serendipity on 60th Street on the Upper East side that has great sundaes and desserts.
If you go to Central Park on the weekend and walk east on 84th Street, at 84th and Second is Dorrian's. It's just an upper east side pub with really good burgers and laid back atmosphere. It's my favorite place in the city to get hammered.
If you want to take an adventurous trip to Harlem:
Red Rooster is a soul food restaurant that has a New Orleans flare.
I'll be in the city next week and plan to hit Arthur Avenue in the Bronx and do some other culinary exploration, and drinking with my friends at Dorrian's. Will post back here with any deserving, cool finds.

After another week of restaurant hopping during New York's Restaurant Week, here are a couple more suggestions:
Society Cafe 52 West 13th Street - the Coq Au Vin Ravioli is delicious
Trattoria Spaghetto at Bleecker and Carmine Street in the West Village is a very cool open corner café with sidewalk seating. The Carbonara and pizza are excellent.
As for Chelsea Market, I regret stepping foot in there. It's too crowded with tourists and Asian teenage girls wheeling their luggage around. Much better to go to Gansevoort Market right across the street and get a burger at Burger Inc. There are also many other shops to choose from.. all less crowded, easily seated and more enjoyable than Chelsea Market when it’s that crowded.

I'll second john's on bleecker. Also if you have a few hours one day, maybe look into doing a food tour. I've only been on one of the Foods of NY tours (original Greenwich village tour) and it was great. Heard the others ones are good too. But it's a cool way to sample some good food from different places and also learn a little of the history of the neighborhood.

I just got back tonight from a short trip (my first ever visit)
Rubirosa - highly recommended- vokda/ tie-dye pizza and got the sunday special pasta
John's on Bleeker Street - just got a pepperoni pizza and it was awesome
Manousheh - Zaatar Bread, Best I've ever had and I've been eating the stuff my entire life.
Fiacco's Sandwich Shop - Chicken + Mozz + Pesto
Le Coucou - got the Dover Sole, seafood stuffed cabbage, sweetbreads
Meatball Shop - not bad for a snack, got classic meatballs and spicy sauce
Omar's Mediterranean - got a mixed grill kabob. Meats were all excellent, sides (hummus and tabouleh) just ok.
Prince Street Pizza - Spicy Pepperoni slice - The crispy pepperoni and spicy sauce were very tasty, but I wasn't a huge fan of the sicilian crust. Preferred the other two pizzas I ate.
Levain Bakery - Chocolate Chip Walnut cookie was unreal.

Scalinatella - 201 E 61st St
Great authentic Italian food with great service. I think you've got to speak Italian to work in this place. Everything looked/sounded so good, so we ended up deferring to the waiter, and letting him order for the table. He hooked it up.. ended up with off the menu dishes and got to taste a little bit of everything.

Sounds like a great trip. Congrats.. We stopped by John’s for pizza but the line was too long, so we walked down to Carmine Street and did Trattoria Spaghetto.
A French cafe that serves breakfast and great coffee is Buvette, 42 Grove Street in the West Village. Great atmosphere.. traditional.. Would print money if it were at Perkins Rowe or River Ranch. Buvette MENU
Take some time and walk around the neighborhoods.. The Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Chelsea, SOHO.. all have their own feel and things to do in the area.
