He’s also a good critic and writes well about food. He’s not afraid to say if a place is not up to snuff. If this was pay to play some shite hole like Goode co. Would be on the list. Hell I don’t think Salt Lick is on it.

Truth partly owned by Johnny Carrabba and pays for that spot. Also Truth has everything made in a Carrabbas commissary kitchen. They slow service to keep a line out the door. Pit Room is better.
Humbug!

He's an investor in the Houston location, but not the original.
Also, having been to the Houston location I can tell you that the commissary kitchen comment is not true, at least for the meats. They have multiple pits on site.

Shouldn’t be. Great destination but not terribly good bbq.

Agreed, I’m just saying that you can’t buy your way on.

Did any of the other Houston area joints make the list?
Posted on 5/31/25 at 10:55 pm to AlwysATgr
Of the top 50?
Brisket & Rice (never heard of it)
Pinketon’s
Corkscrew (In Spring)
Rosemeyer - also in Spring
I may have missed some of the other suburbs in Houston area. No Killen’s is nuts to me.

Thanks
There were several Houston area joints that have made it in recent years (Roegels, Killens, Tejas, Bretts). Wondered if they were on this round. Also there's a relatively new joint in Montgomery (Bar-A) that I haven't tried yet but the same people in my circle that were talking up Burnt Bean two years ago are talking this one up.

Killer’s is an honorable mention apparently…which is what it deserves…good, not great bbq. Unless I was in Pearland, I wouldn’t go out of my way.

if you like your brisket with a bitter taste, this is your spot. He uses a lot of dirty smoke on purpose. Everything else was real good though.

Been to Burnt Bean several times. It is incredible. Shockingly the ribs may be a bigger draw than the fatty brisket. Usually I skip ribs in Texas in general. Sides are very good and atmosphere is in an old historic type building downtown that’s pretty cool.

It's every bit as good as you've heard/read. Pulled lamb shoulder as well as lamb chops. Kofta skewers. Try it all.
Not local. How far would you drive one way to try this ?

I’m somewhat local, between Austin & San Antonio. So many great bbq options I personally wouldn’t travel very far. Kinda weak but I haven’t ventured to Lockhart yet for that reason. I know there’s great food there but I’d have to drive past a bunch of great places.
KG is very close to the Austin airport so whenever friends fly in to visit it’s an obvious stop.

I think Goldies does the same thing. Never been. But folks rave about it.

KG is good, but I've had a couple things that were so-so. It's a good spot to visit if you are in town, but it's no destination to travel to. It's just a food truck outside of a micro-brewery. If I'm going to travel, I'm going to go to a much bigger place, like Snow's in Lexington, or the places in Lockhart / Luling.

“Texas BBQ” way overrated…..
The world has been cooking meats with “wood” since the caveman discovered fire!
$30 for a pound of bland texas sausage?
$35 for a pound of brisket using SPG cooked at 225 degrees with red oak cooked low and slow…..Wow….nothing new here?
I’ve had brisket cooked exactly like so called “texas bbq” 60 years ago in a small town Louisiana bbq joint across the tracks that any “texas bbq” couldn’t hold a match against.
I’d say that “Texas Monthly” expand their reach and take a trip to Lafayette on a Sunday when BBQ is served at local dives and see what BBQ is really like…it’s not just the meats that are awesome, but the sides are over the top!
