My cousin recently opened Rougaroux Capitol Bodega in Spanish Town. The menu combines Louisiana cooking with Mexican flavors, with items like Gumbo Birria Tacos, a Gumbo Smashburger, Boudin Pastor Bombs, Cajun Carnitas, Blackened Chicken Tinga, po’boys and more.

Their regular hours are Monday through Friday from 11 AM to 3 PM. On Saturdays, they serve brunch from 9 AM to 1 PM with Breakfast Gumbo Birria Tacos, Trash Browns, a Breakfast Smashburger and a Gumbo Breakfast Burrito.

They’re having their official grand opening this Friday from 5 to 8 PM. There will be food, music, bingo, trivia and prizes, and it’s family friendly. If you’re around downtown Baton Rouge, stop by and give them a try.

Gumbo debri and Tacos do not belong on the same menu. Even the spanishtown freaks will revolt over this nonsense.

Man, why can't we have places that just do simple things right?

He's done popups at local breweries for a couple of years now and was also in house at Pelican to Mars for a while so I guess he's just sticking with the menu that has been successful for him.

It may be great. But it's not a menu I'm interested in.

I think it's nice of you to help your family get the word out. Good luck to your cousin (he doesn't need or want these few negative Nancy's as customers)

I don’t think someone advertising “gumbo birria tacos” is trying to be “authentic” to any single culinary tradition.

There’s a lot of places to get bbq, cajun food, sandwiches, or tacos. There’s not nearly as many doing the style of fusion that is being attempted here. Maybe there’s good reason for that, but I have enjoyed what I’ve bought from his pop-up’s over the years.

I’d think you’d need to be Cajun OR Hispanic to pull this off. Otherwise it’s just clown shoes. The bastardizing of traditional cuisine for low IQ eaters is out of control and abhorrent.

Some of you seem to want to bend over backwards with food philosophy to crap on something you haven't tried. Maybe it tastes amazing, and if so, who cares about the rest?

Unless it’s about tomatoes in gumbo/jambalaya

I gotta go with the purists on that one:

The food might taste delicious.
But as a customer, it would take some convincing to get me to go in.

Gumbo gravy doesn’t belong on a smash burger. Gumbo debris doesn’t belong in a taco in a birria taco place.

I wish your relatives well, hope they’re successful. But as a consumer, looking at that menu it appears they’re trying too hard to be doing too many things.

Want to be a Cajun place? Sure. Want to be a taco place? Fine. But the menu seems a bit bizarre.

I think that menu would work well in a food truck. But a brick and mortar place? I’m not so sure.

Man, some harsh responses in here. At least it's something unique. My parents always complain that they don't see the allure of Elsie's or why it's so popular. They get a shrimp poboy every time - which I'm sure is great but can be had at 100's of places around town. Its OK to venture out of your comfort zone

Agreed, who wouldn’t love a gumbo boudin taco with red bean queso. Buncha prudes.
