Moving to A new city so we are gonna rent for a year to see how we like it. New place is perfect except that it has an electric stove/oven. It’s brand new and the land lord is pretty wealthy so all the appliances are very nice.

However, I really hate electric stoves. Are there any options for portable indoor gas cooking that are safe? I’m thinking about getting an outdoor stove top as the weather where we are moving is usually really nice and primarily using that for the stove if I can’t find something I can use indoors.

As far as the oven, I don’t have much experience with electric ovens, are they as inferior to gas ovens as electric stove tops are to gas stoves?

Just use the electric and don’t worry about it. I’m sure your landlord doesn’t want you using a portable cooker inside.

Put one of these out back next to your grill.

Get an induction burner.

The heat and quick reaction of gas in something that can be put away.

I never had a electric stove in my home but used them plenty. I get along with them good enough but I also agree with a gas burner out side. I cook outside every chance I get.

Yup that’s basically my plan as of now.

A grill outside is good regardless - but you can probably suck it up and survive the electric stove for a year without toooooo much hardship

Electric ovens are better than gas ovens.

I don’t like cooking on electric stovetops, but it’s not so inferior that I’d make drastic changes to a rental I really liked. You’ll get used to the differences fairly quickly.

Stop being so dramatic. Learn how to use the electric stove and get over it.

So what you are saying is you can’t cook on an electric stove. That’s weird. Most of us can with no problem.

You can cook on an electric stove just like you’d cook on gas.

Electric ovens are better than gas ovens. (Especially for broiling.) Gas stovetops are better than electric stovetops (unless you’re using induction burners with which I only have limited experience).

With electric burners, it takes longer to heat up and longer to cool down. You’ll need to set the dial higher for a simmer on an electric burner than on a gas burner. And when you turn off the heat, move the pot or pan off the burner because the burner is going to stay hot for awhile.

You’ll figure it out and everything will be fine.

Not when the electricity goes out, even lots of the new gas ovens have to be plugged into an electrical socket. The stove top burners will still work with a flame to kickstart it when the lights go out but the oven won’t work. I had this disagreement with my wife when we bought the gas oven we currently
have, I lost that argument.

You'll get use to it over time. My now late father-in-law had all electric in his kitchen and when he was sick and I stayed with him for weeks at a time I'd cook on his electric stove.

It took a bit of getting use to since it doesn't cool down as quickly as a gas stove when adjusting the temperature, but after a while I got the hang of it. Not enough so that I'd ever want one mind you.

Mine works without electricity.

Just have to get a lighter in to the vents at the bottom near the burners. Fires right up. It's a Bertazzoni that's maybe seven years old.

Okay. I’ve been in my house for 19 years now and always had a gas stove and oven. I can think of exactly one time wheee the power was out and I needed the oven.

That’s what we have, good to know. Thankfully haven’t had to test this option yet.

Well, I have had to test it more than I would like because the igniter on the oven doesn't like to work half the time.

Zero issues with the top burners though.
