Need suggestions for Antoine's please...

Hello! We are going to New Orleans in a few weeks and have decided to go to Antoine's for my upcoming birthday. This will be our first visit there. I seem to remember suggestions on this board recently as to what part of the restaurant to request when making reservations...
Will some of you who are familiar with the restaurant kindly help us out? Thank you and have a great weekend!

Don't go! That place is way over rated. Plenty other great places to eat in the quarter.

dont. You'll be disappointed to say the least when you dress up nicely for a fine occasion only to find the restaurant, which has all the ambience of a mausoleum these days, lets in people wearing NFL jerseys and flip flops. Oh yea and the food isn't close to worth the price tag.

Matthew is the GM if you need anything but request Chetta or Charles as your waiter, tell them it is a birthday, let them take you on the tour and enjoy.

My last meals there were disappointing. I haven't been in several years. However, in general. It's not recommended by many on this board. My personal opinion is that there are better options. If you want other suggestions, ask and you shall receive. Happy Birthday, though.

You can do a lot better in New Orleans for your birthday. If you absolutely have to go to Antoines to check it off some bucket list, go to the bar, order a drink or two and some souffle potatoes. Soak it in and then go eat elsewhere.
If you want that type of food, go to Galatoire's or Arnaud's. Both have just as much history and ambiance, but better food and overall experience.

The puffed soufflé potatoes, oysters Foch, oysters Rockefeller, and whatever basic fish they are offering. Baked Alaska for dessert. Don't set your expectations too high and try to appreciate the place for what it is, or maybe just for what it once was.

I went once, had a good meal, took the kids. Had the 1840 room to ourselves, other than the tours coming through and taking pics.
Food was good for the price. I think the only thing I didn't like was paying $8 each for every kids shirley temple.

The oysters three ways dish was pretty bad. They invented rockefeller but I recently had an oyster rockerfeller in Hot Springs, that was actually more memorable. (Sadly)
I agree it is a grand restaurant but the food leaves something to be desired. Mainly in presentation. They plate like a lunch counter. Fine if it;s a $8 plate, crappy for a $40 entree.

Seconding this. Definitely ask about the baked Alaska.
Are there better places in the Quarter? Yes, of course. Just because it's not what people remember from the past does not mean that the history isn't there to enjoy. In a lot of ways, New Orleans as a whole is the same way. There are better and worse things about the city compared to 15, 30, 50, 100 years ago. People can still enjoy the city with its tack, I'm sure the OP can find plenty to enjoy at Antoine's. Enjoy.

Absolutely agree and I like the baked oyster apps at those places much more than at Antoine's.

Thanks to everyone for your comments...I mainly want to go to say I've been there and to get the baked Alaska. We are basically celebrating for a month and will also be going to NYC for our annual birthday trip there, this will not be the only birthday meal we have... I realize Antoine's may not be what it once was but I think the history and classic dishes there will make for a memorable evening.

You might enjoy going to dinner at Arnaud's which serves the same but better quality classic dishes. Then, go to Antoine's for dessert! Then, you can say you went to two historic restaurants and what a fun night.

Now that you've said this, listen to Gris Gris, do dinner at Arnaud's or Galatoire's then dessert at Antoine's. You'd be taking advantage of each of their respective strength's while enjoying two NOLA classics. Added bonus to that strategy is an easy walk would help make some room for dessert.

The food may not be the best in town but this is a great old New Orleans institution. If you have never been there I would not dissuade you from going. The regular locals sit in the big red room next to the front dining room. Tip the waiter well and have him give you the grand tour of the historic building. (How ya like dem ersters?) Get soufflé potatoes with bernaise sauce, the original Oysters Rockefeller, whatever meat or fish dish looks good, baked Alaska and café brulot. I like the place. Better yet - gofor the lunch special and go to Galatoire's for dinned.
