I know I know, I'm a terrible person for saying it, but it's the truth. And the frustrating part is she's a damn good cook for the other 364 days of the year. She slaves away for the entire week making these bullshite casseroles and then we eat decent turkey, but I don't know why no one can acknowledge that most Thanksgiving dishes kinda blow.

Am I gonna get slaughtered if I suggest to her maybe we do a non-traditional Thanksgiving menu? She makes an incredible gumbo that the entire neighborhood loves, and hell that's got turkey in it so it's sorta close. No one really likes just roasted turkey by itself. And what about the kind of side dishes we all love during the rest of the year?

I always feel bad because she works like crazy and we all are sorta like eh about the food whereas we're usually fighting over the last bite of her regular meals.

Thoughts? Should I just always ask for seconds and STFU or do I suggest a change?

If she enjoys traditional, Stfu. Let momma enjoy what she makes for thanksgiving. Unless she doesn't like it either, which if that is the case, by all means make the suggestion.

Quit being a doucher, and just ask her if she will make a thanksgiving gumbo this year, and a few of the sides that you enjoy year around.

Why don't you and your family take the sides off her hands? Does no one else cook?

My mom makes amazing dressing, but her turkey kinda sucks... so I took that over.

My sister makes good mashed potatoes... so she is on that.

Aunt is on pinto and green beans.

Uncle is on ham and corn bread.

Cousins on dessert.

You get the picture.

You STFU about your opinions, tell her how excited you are about Thanksgiving at her house, and say you've been getting into cooking and would like to make the _____.

One dish at a time or it'll be obvious.

Maybe she'd love to hear that she doesn't need to make all of those bullshite casseroles. Does everyone really think their mother loves all the work? I only love it if people love the food.

Don't tell her you don't think she does a good job, tell her you'd love for her to take it easier and to make a simpler meal so she can enjoy time with the family. Suggest that the new family tradition should be turkey gumbo.

Well since the only way I can see my mother on Thanksgiving is the picture on the wall, I'd say just enjoy whatever and however she does it and realize one day you won't have to endure all those bullshite casseroles.

I would give a lot to see my mother making a bullshite casserole in her kitchen one more time.

My mom always cooks the turkey into a dry, rubbery, disgusting mess. Every year.

I have tried and tried to get her to let me cook the turkey, but she won't budge. It is what it is. I'll just mix the turkey with the gravy and dressing like I always do to make it edible. It's still good, but I know it could be so much better.

At least she makes awesome dressing.

Ask her to make a gumbo as well. I have always had gumbo as well as all the others stuff on thanksgiving.

My whole family sucks at Thanksgiving. We're nothing but a bunch of white people from middle Tennessee that think salt and black pepper are the only acceptable seasonings. I try and make a dish that's a little more adventurous each year.

My mom does the same thing, except she finally recognized it and started buying her dishes, which still aren't good.

I think I'm going to try my hand at it this year.

You say this now, but after she's gone you'll wish you hadn't.

Do it. Traditional Thanksgiving dinner is vastly overrated.
We eat Surf and Turf and drink Bourbon and don't apologize for it. Our guests always thank us.

This is why my wife and I are hosting. I'm smoking the bird on the BGE and handing the drinks. The wife is cooking the sides and desserts. I love smoking food and drinking. The wife loves cooking and baking. Everyone else can just visit and relax... maybe chase around the toddler since he's the only kid, for now, in the family. Win/win for everyone.

My office is doing Italian Thanksgiving this year... lasagna, garlic bread, etc.

Fortunately my family can all cook, at least my and my parents' generations.

My problem with Thanksgiving is it's just too much food. We have turkey (which always comes out great), another protein (lamb, ham, pork loin, etc), and then probably 6-7 side dishes when it's all said and done.

Every year the same food, which is delicious, but it gets tired.

I'd be fine with a simple menu:
Soup to start
Turkey
Oyster Dressing
Shrimp and Crab Mirliton
Cauliflower with cheese or sweet potato casserole
Dessert

I complain, yet my Thanksgivings are filled with top notch food all the way through.
