TJ ribs can't be overrated. When is the last time anyone said it was a good-great place to eat? Just look at this board, even apart from these types of threads. The only time I have ever seen TJ Ribs mentioned positively was one thread talking positively about their second location doing some things well.

Other than that, it is almost always negative. I would go so far as to say that TJ Ribs is UNDERRATED. I've heard people talk more positively in BR and on this board about chain BBQ and steakhouses than TJ's. TJ Ribs is at least better than run of the mill chains.

...Now Mike Anderson's, on the other hand, lots of people in BR still talk about it being the best seafood in BR. Which it most certainly is not.

If Rocco's IS rated than it
s overrated, I made the mistake of going to PoBoy Express and I'd say Rocco's was about on par with that.
Mansur's?? what's up with this place? I've never been but I haven't really heard much about it good or bad?

having grown up in Texas/Oklahoma area i've eaten a lot of bbq. I asked my Baton Rouge friends where I could go to get some good BBQ. I was told TJ Ribs would beat any BBQ I've eaten anywhere, especially the baby back ribs. i went in with an open mind. they were exactly wrong.

When TJ Ribs first opened it was actually pretty good. But otherwise I'm with you on this. I lived in Texas awhile and I've eaten at Jackstack in KC. TJ Ribs isn't bad but has a long way to go.

Chimes is a close second, but I wasn't really dissapointed since I wasn't expecting it to be good. it's a bar. Poboys and fried shite are safe. I didn't go in expecting fine dining. Locals seem to romanticize Chimes, but it's just a bar with a lot of beer choices. Every decent sized city has one and they are all pretty much the same story.

Yeah, more or less. Chimes does decent blackened stuff (but who doesn't?) and the stuffed potatoes and Greek salad are pretty good. Otherwise it's the best place near campus but that isn't saying much.

I understand Pastime used to be that way but that's more atmosphere than anything else. And if you're under 40 that was never there anyhow.

As much as this place gets talked about on here by the older folk(I'm 23), this place better have been damn good to warrant all this praise, way back when.

Hit or miss every time I go.

Many on this board are of the opinion that they serve 'quality' food. It is hard to screw up burgers and sandwiches. I would not drive out of my way to eat at Chelsea's.

to be fair, they do a lot more than that. It's one the better values in town.

LINK

DiGiulio Brothers....I've been there twice and it's no better than Portobello's IMO, and that's not saying much.

Mansur's is my favorite "upscale" restaurant in BR. I've always liked it more than Juban's.

All you people are crazy. TJ Ribs is good---I mean it's not the best BBQ on the planet but for ribs and brisket in BR, it's good.
Ruffinos is good. Ginos is good....try the lamb at Ginos.

And everyone can rag on Mike Andersons but other than La. Lagnappe, I don't know of any better. I mean it's fried seafood. Mike Anderson's fried shrimp isn't any better or worse than Drusilla's or any other place that fries crap.

We went and ate at Acme Oyster House 2 weeks ago.....I mean it's good fried stuff but no better or worse than Mike Anderson's. Now the Oyster soup at Acme was good.

I don't know of any overrated places here. There are a bunch that are pretty good. It's kind of silly saying Jones Creek Cafe is overrated.....overrated as compared to what? It'
s fried friggin seafood. Overrated compared to NOLA or Emerill's? Yes, then it's overrated. But compared to any other fried seafood place....what did anyone expect it was going to be?

Their fried seafood is FAR worse than Mike Anderson's. In my humble opinion.

I had fried stuffed shell crab and wife had fried oysters.

I thought her oysters were better than the crab because the crab was fried too hard. But it's fried food. It isn't a prime filet from NOLA. I wouldn't say its better or worse than fried food at Jones Creek Cafe or fried food from Sammy's.

When I order fried food I know what I'm getting. Food that could be fried more or less than I like. It's friggin fried.

Last time I was at ACME the fried seafood was awful. Bland, cold, the fries were soggy, really disappointing. Not making that mistake again.

Ok.

Also, if you can't tell the difference between fried seafood houses, I am not sure you are paying attention. I know it is easy to say they are all the same, but it's not.
Some places use fresh seafood vs frozen. Some use very good seasoning vs some who buy pre-coated stuff that is bland. Sometimes a place does not change its grease often enough.

Then there is also the issue of service that can be better or worse.

I didn't say I couldn't tell the difference between Ryan's or Golden Coral fried stuff and Drusilla's. Not everything has to be taken to the extreme.

But when you go to Acme Oyster House, Mike Anderson's, Jones Creek Cafe and Sammy's, they are all pretty much the same.

You're the ones saying Mike Anderson's is overrated...overrated how? It's fried seafood. If you expected it to be the Emeril's of fried seafood then maybe you were expecting too much....not me. When I go to a fried seafood place, I know what I'm getting.....fried seafood.

We will have to agree to disagree then. Mike Andersons had gotten to where it was overpriced, bland, sometimes soggy seafood.
That was some time ago, so maybe they canged.

IMO, having lived here a long time, many places suffer when moved from their original location or expanded. Mike Anderson's has never been as good as when it was in the old Collegetown grocery starting out. If I want their menu, I always drive out to the one at the Holiday Inn in Gonzales.

Sammy's is not as good (IMO) as before they expanded, although it is still one of my favorite places to eat. Mansurs, for sure the atmosphere, as a date place, does not compare to when it was in the back of the shopping center bulldozed by WallMark. Lagnaippe was not that great last time we went, though that was a first, as it is near the top of the list for me. Headed there this week for a followup test.

To many of the critics in this thread, what are your expectations going in. I happen to like the pizzas and calzones (Tiger Bait) at Pasttime. So what if I have been going there since I was attending LSU a thousand years ago? Knowing what a place does best helps enhance the experience. I have had some really stellar crabcakes at The Chimes several times, even though location and beer selection are reasons enough to go. I have good friends in the business, and it is tough to keep quality at its best when you are changing personnel often, and dealing with customer's changing tastes. Back when Ralph and Kacoo's was still pretty decent, they opened in Houston near my office, and the food was not nearly as good as Baton Rouge. They said they had to take some of the cayenne out of their dishes because Texans were used to jalapenos and could not handle the red pepper.
