menu is small... I find myself always getting blackened gator and duck/sausage gumbo, which are good. And the red beans are good.

Rest is just ok.

Whatever. Most people I know love it, and it has been kicking for over half a century. I'll continue to make the drive to Hammond.

a whole five years huh? Joe's Crab Shack has been around longer than that...just being open for five years is not exactly a ringing endorsement for their quality. Glad to hear you're going to keep going, places need repeat business.

I fixed it. I meant half a century. The place has some loyal customers, too, and it is always packed. So the repeat business is something that Hi-Ho is not lacking.

I disagree with Jubans being over rated. It is solid for special occasions.

Juban's baffles me. I have an amazing meal there, then within 2 months i had a crappy meal. Their consistency seems to be all over the place, but when they do it well it's very, very good....but unfortunately that's not always the case.

now I'll preface this by saying I've never eaten at Hi-Ho...but after reading this review from activediner.com, I'm not so sure I'd want to:

quote:

I am not sure why this place calls itself a Barbeque restaurant; there is not other meat other than beef or pork sandwich available on the menu. The thinly sliced meat that was inside the sandwich looked liked it was sliced from a regular piece of Deli meat, not a barbequed slab of meat. There were not any chicken, sausage, coleslaw, baked beans, or potato salad on the menu. These are standard items which are basically offered in most other BBQ restaurants. The BBQ sauce was weak and watery and did not have the usual BBQ flavor that you expect from such food. Overall if you want to eat there bring your favorite BBQ sauce, perhaps you can add your own flavor to the sandwich you buy there.
The restaurant was clean and the service was friendly. The prices were reasonable now, although there was a sign showing higher menu prices starting 7/14/2008.

...ouch.

Yes, that would be better.

I'm just fricking with you, I don't really care. I've never even eaten there. I just know how opinionated you are, how much you defend your shite, and generally don't have any qualms about shitting on something someone else likes. I just wanted to give you a hard time man.

I'm with the Mike Anderson's voting block. How many times have I heard people rave about a friggin' piece of soggy fish drowning in butter and lump crab. Booooooring and overrated.

Topless, Hi-Ho is legit. Also, they don't pretend to be a typical BBQ joint with ribs, chicken, etc. They serve cheap, simple, tasty little sandwiches and have done so for about 3 generations.

Also, any BBQ reviewer that loves strong sauce so much would probably get laughed out of most BBQ circuits. This reviewer would probably me mad that central grocery only has muffs, and not a good red sauce.

Topless, like El Tiger said, "Hi-Ho is legit." Your source is also an idiot. Here, read this:

LINK

Per WAFB
"So why, WHY is the barbecue here so danged good?!? Because they do the crucial things right! There’s not a huge menu. You get barbecued beef or pork. They do offer a ham and cheese sandwich on the menu. I guess you have to provide some variety. You can have it dressed, and you can get (!?!) cheese put on the BBQ. End of menu.

The meat deserves some attention here. Most places take great pains to show you where the meat is cooked. They have big custom fireplaces and grills, and make a big show of turning the meat. At Hi-Ho, I haven’t the foggiest idea how they cook their meat. There is a definite smoke flavor there, just a bit of it, kind of eased in from the side.

Once in a great while, I’ll taste a little crunch in there. That’s what Carolina cooks call “outside meat,” the portion of the pig that gets crunchy because that’s the side closest to the flames. They ought to mix a bit more on this in, but who am I to argue with greatness?

The buns are toasted on the grill. The meat is warmed, placed on the crispy bun, and the sauce is mixed in right there on the hot grill. (Very few places still do this!) In fact, your sandwich will usually have a darkened ring on its top—collateral damage from the grill surface. Don’t sweat it, it just adds to the experience!

And the sauce… Most places swear by the sauce. It’s either real ketchupy or real vinegary, and generally serves to hide the true flavor of the meat. Whoever came up with Hi-Ho’s sauce deserves a medal. The sauce flavor is hard to place—coming mainly down in the “chili powder” camp of the sauce world. But the big thing here is that the sauce is oh-so-light that it really brings out the flavor of the meat--and that’s becoming a lost art in the barbecue business.

Did you read my WAFB review (not mine) above?

I hate vinegar based sauces. When we were on the East Coast, that was all there was for the most part. It was very disapointing. Hi-Ho's sauce is very authentic and doesn't take anything away from their tasty beef.
