La Morenita at 412 Ambassador Caffery Pkwy (near I-10 compared to the other places mentioned) will be the best Mexican food in the city. It's where the local Mexicans eat and shop, so it's the real deal. It's so authentic that there's very little English spoken. When I'm there, they usually have to find an employee that speaks even a tiny bit of English.

Yeah. When I used to work in Lafayette, that was one of my go-to spots.

Lengua tacos and a Mexican Coke.

When that one shut down the guy who owned it later opened a Ninfas in Duson in the old Round Up building. That’s right, Duson had a Ninfas for a brief few months or so.

1)La Pagua
2)El Paso

Agave gets alot of hate and rightfully so. I eat there sometimes out of convenience and the fajitas are decent and the queso is good.

Chuy's doesn't feel or taste like the chuy's I had in Austin 10-15 years ago. but the sauces are still good.

Ninfa's was the best Tex-Mex in Lafayette for a good while. The Pakistani owner let the place go to shite and cut corners. After moving from behind Bennigan's to the old Tampico building (where Pimon Thai is currently) it went downhill fast. He didn't keep his Mexican cooks and bought cheap ingredients, no longer made homemade tortillas, and it got even dirtier than it was. He pushed Indian food in the other part of the restaurant that wasn't being used for Ninfa's and ran off the loyal customers.

I’m assuming you’re talking about la pagua. It was the only good Mexican place until I finally found a legit one the other day, La Papa Loca, hole in the wall right off eraste landry I believe. Very very good. In my
Opinion, all
Other Mexican I’ve had in Lafayette is trash. I lived in Lake Worth, FL for a while and the Spanish and Mexican food there was like no other.

La Fonda food is garbage. Their half and half’s back in the day when I used to drink, is a different story. Holy balls.

So yeah, if you’re in Lafayette go to La Papa Loca for authentic Mexican and I believe Houndoran. Not a lot of English spoken at all in there but you def won’t regret it.

If you expand to Cuban food then Cafe Habana City is great

And for a Venezualan option, try Patacon on Bertrand across from Legends.

Small place. Free standing building that looks like a small box. Only has about 7 tables.

It's a lunch spot. Might not be open for dinner. No alcohol either.

ETA: Cafe Habana City is indeed awesome

All of these suck. I agree, it was probably Posado's he's thinking of...

And for everyone in the is thread... for god's sake, it's Lafonda. NOT Lafondas.

LaFonda is great for margarita's and if you know what to order. Don't go there for tacos and enchiladas.

TBH, some of the most authentic mexican food can be had at the mexican grocery store cafe. It's inside of El Ranchito (I think that's the name) on Cameron.

Carniciera el Ranchito

There are a hell of a lot of people who disagree with you. You need to limit your order to:

Margaritas
Steaks
Fried rabbit
Fried Chicken
Carne Asada
Chicken Tapatia

There's 1 or 2 other things I order on occasion, but rarely. If you go to Lafonda and order tacos, enchiladas, rellenos, tamales, you will be disappointed.

Stick to the above, and you will leave happy and with a good buzz.

Agreed as well. That's right on point.

I brought a family member, who lives out of state, to LaFonda for dinner this week. He got a steak and was impressed.

But let's not turn this into who's got the best steaks thread.

I was born and raised in Lafayette and I’ve never thought of this. Everyone has always said LaFondas.
