If it’s just you or you and a significant other I’d say Harbortown or Midtown. If you have kids in school I’d look in East Memphis or Germantown/Collierville. Suburbs would be a hike across the river, but if you want good public schools that’s where you have to go.

They are, but from my experience they aren't quite as good as the Mason/Memphis locations.

We are not from Memphis, but visited often for work. When we travelled there later, my wife loved Automatic Slim's Tonga Club, just across the street from the Peabody. It's a martini bar, but we always went for the food and loved it.

Andrew Michael - upscale Italian spot in Brookhaven Circle that was very very good
Hog and Hominy - across the street from Andrew Michael and started by the same two dudes. Great drinks, great apps, great pizzas.
Some other great spots in the downtown area:
Amelia Gene’s - contemporary fine dining type of place. They do a Thursday tasting menu special that was really good when I went. They also have a normal menu.
Catherine and Mary’s - same owners as Andrew Michael and H&H. Italian place downtown.
Flight - does flights of small plates. Heard awesome things about it.
Itta Bena - I never went here but people I worked with always said it was great. It’s on Beale Street above BB Kings
Porch and Parlor - nice steakhouse in Overton Square
Folk’s Folly - old school steakhouse that is a Memphis favorite. I thought porch and parlor was a lot better.
Solid recommendations. Someone also mentioned Gibson's. That's a must stop. I'd add Bog & Barley. McEwen's, which is downtown. A lot of this depends on what part of town you're staying in.
Iris is good and Second Line, another of Kelly English's places, is next door.
You can't beat the bar at Erling Jensens.

Another more casual place I really liked was Flying Saucer downtown. I went there a lot of Friday after working at The Med. Setup was great for watching sports. Incredible beer list. And the food was damn good. Incredible burgers and wings.

Gus' is some of the best fried chicken you will ever eat. We eat in the one in Germantown often. There is one on Front and another on Mount Moriah. I know the lady that convinced the original place in Mason to let her expand it and franchise the restaurant. She's killed it.
A very new restaurant that has recently been opened is called Josephine Estelle. Same owns as hog and hominy and Andrew Michael.
Bog and Barley in east Memphis is very good.
Top's BBQ has an amazing hamburger. Get the double. I've never eaten the BBQ there. Only the burger.
Huey's has good burgers as well.
South of Beale is very good.
Dyer's burger's in downtown and also in Collierville is good. They deep fry the burger. The grease is suppose to be over 100yrs old.
Coastal is ok. Food is pretty good but expensive for what you get. I wouldn't recommend it.
Also in east memphis is Babalu. It's good. In the same building is "Big Bad Breakfast", very good.
Someone mentioned Humdingers. It was sold and sucks now.
For a VERY good real mexican meal, Deli Mexicana. There are 2 locations. East Memphis on Poplar and on Germantown Pkwy.

If you're in town on a Sunday, The Beauty Shop has an excellent brunch, but you need to make reservations way in advance. A lot folks like Sunrise, but I've never been.

When we were there we looked up the best bbq joints and went to one of them. Honestly I don’t remember the name. It was meh. No AC.
What I remember most was all of the twerking happening on the horse drawn carriages.
And the distinct smell of weed in the streets.

The company I started with put me up in a hotel downtown for the first week. Nice hotel. No desire to ever go downtown ever again.
And after living in TX for as long as I have, I could give 2 shits about Memphis BBQ. I know it would probably just let me down.

Dyers Burgers are very messy and very good. Cooked in an iron skillet that is full of grease so the thin patties float.

It's a different BBQ. More pork oriented than say brisket and what Texas is known for. Commissary's pulled pork is very good. For really good BBQ - It's the Three Way
