Are y'all able to get KJ Big Block? I've only seen it at stores that sell KJ grills as well, making me think you must be an authorized dealer or something.

Home Depot

In addition to Home Depot, Walmart has it at least seasonally except for around Christmas when they flood their shelves with other crap.
They have the 30 pound bags at the prairieville store at times which works out cheaper than two 15 pounders.
For a while there, I was finding Royal Oak Large Chunk at the College Drive location. That was really nice, but I haven't been there or seen that variety in a while.

ETA: Looks like Listeater already mentioned the 30 lb. bags

A 17lb bag is like $15 at the store, but is $20-40 on Amazon.
It's alot of weight to ship. "free shipping" is built into their price

Hutch's Hardware on 621 in Dutchtown sales FOGO. It's really good, but definitely pricey. I use it for longer cooks and stick to Royal Oak for everyday stuff.

Very ashamed to say the last big bag of B&B I got has been sitting unopened on my patio for a month now. It's high time I bust that bad thing open and fire up ole rusty

What are the best briquets out there, and why? I haven't samples a lot of brands. I've bought mostly Kingsford Professional because they sell it at Costco.

I'm relatively new to charcoal grilling.

I just finished a bag of Weber briquettes. I thought it burned really clean and left a good flavor. The one bag got me through an 8 pound pork butt smoke, a 12 pound brisket smoke, and twice cooking burgers and brats, which I thought wasn't bad for burn time. There probably is enough partial burned bricks left I could fire it up again for another grilling session.

It was the first bag I bought for my first charcoal grill, just last month. I think I will try B&B or Kingsford next to compare.

I use Royal Oak bc I like it and I can always get it cheaply enough at Home Depot or Restaurant Depot.

When Restaurant Depot stopped stocking Royal Oak for a time I tried Fogo. Sure it looked pretty; with big, heavy chunks. But no matter how long you ran your fire it continued to emit a heavy charcoal smell that permeated the food. I like the taste of smoke, not charcoal.

Tried Cowboy in desperation once. It burned so fast I went through a bag in half the time as with Royal Oak.

I picked up a bag of the Weber, today, but will try Roya Oak, too.

I'm comfortable enough with my grill to start experimenting a bit...

Royal Oak All Natural, B&B Oak, Cowboy All Natural (formerly Stubbs), and Trader Joes all make a quality briquette.

They are all fairly well priced, burn hot and clean, and produce little ash. All four should be fairly easy to find at various stores. They are all 95% hardwood and 5% corn starch binder (no fillers)

Weber briquettes are also very good, but they are twice the price per pound of the ones listed above.

Is Kingsford that bad that nobody mentions it?

Plenty of people buy and use Kingsford charcoal. It does not burn as hot or as long as the others I listed and it makes a lot of ash.

Kingsford Original also has a lot of stuff in it besides wood like mineral char, coal, limestone, borax, sodium nitrate and sawdust.

Kingsford Professional (or Competition - same product) has wood char, starch binder, and borax, so it's a cleaner charcoal than the Original, but it costs about the same as the four I listed and does not perform as well.

Thanks for the info. I use a Weber Kettle, now, and am figuring things out. I have been using Kingsford Professional for the last few months as I figure out how to use the grill.

Now that I'm dialed in, I want to look at the charcoal I use. I can get about 8 hours out of a load with the Slow and Sear, but that means that I need to refuel if I'm doing a brisket or larger butt.

I just saw Royal Oak Classic is on sale at Lowes for $1.99 for a 15 lb bag. I will probably pick up a few of those, as well. Won't matter that much for a quick cook.

I've only ever tried BGE, Royal Oak and Wicked Good lump.

As has been said, supposedly BGE gets the "best" of Royal Oak's lump charcoal, but I honestly have never really been able to tell a difference other than BGE typically has some bigger chunks. It's not worth the price difference to me.

Wicked Good probably had the biggest chunks of all of them. It's a good product too, but about the same price as the BGE at my local Ace, so I usually always find myself going the Royal Oak route from Home Depot. I think it's the best value of the three. The only times I'll go with BGE or WG is if I happen to be at Ace and know I know I'm out of charcoal at home or close to it.

I used to use Wicked Good years ago. It is well below Fogo and BB XL. The restaurant version of Fogo is good all around and for low/slow, the axe breaker can burn super hot and takes longer to light, and the picture attached is good all around too, typically slightly smaller pieces. I like the Box XL a lot, too.

Had my first couple of shite bags of Kamado Joe Big Block XL. Bought a couple of 20 lb. bags from Lowes a while back. If i didn't know better, i'd swear they used that cheap shite Cowboy Brand and just took the KJ bags and repurposed them.

The coals were small, and dirty. They lit very quick, sparked up like fireworks, and i found some bonus material in the bag. I thought something was strange when it came with not 1, but 2 interior bags inside the KJ bag.

I bitched about it on the KJ facebook page after seeing an advertisement for it, and they asked me to contact customer service. So i emailed them. They apologized and sent me 2 30 lb. bags, no charge to the house. I haven't opened them yet, but from the feel of the outside, this seems to be the large quality chunks i'm used to.

They never answered me when i asked them if they switched coal manufacturers. But if the 2 bags they sent turns out not to be the quality stuff i'm used to, i'll probably switch to FOGO.
