How long did it take after Parish upped their game with GitM for Brightside, Devil's Harvest, Grace and Grit, and others to step it up? And most importantly, Abita dropped Jockamo completely...

2 years, I think

Didn't Parish start before all of them?

But they need to be. Competition should be driving the quality of the beer up. It seems that Abita is probably the only brewery in the state who's sales are driven more by advertising, rather than by beer quality and being a local neighborhood business.

they seriously need to step their shite up. Here is a list of breweries that sold more in 2015

1 D. G. Yuengling and Son, Inc Pottsville PA
2 Boston Beer Co Boston MA
3 Sierra Nevada Brewing Co Chico CA
4 New Belgium Brewing Co Fort Collins CO
5 Gambrinus San Antonio TX
6 Lagunitas Brewing Co* Petaluma CA
7 Bell’s Brewery, Inc Comstock MI
8 Deschutes Brewery Bend OR
9 Minhas Craft Brewery Monroe WI
10 Stone Brewing Co Escondido CA
11 Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits* San Diego CA
12 Brooklyn Brewery Brooklyn NY
13 Firestone Walker Brewing Co Paso Robles CA
14 Oskar Blues Brewing Holding Co Longmont CO
15 Duvel Moortgat USA Kansas City & Cooperstown MO/NY
16 Dogfish Head Craft Brewery Milton DE
17 Matt Brewing Co Utica NY
18 SweetWater Brewing Co Atlanta GA
19 Harpoon Brewery Boston MA
20 New Glarus Brewing Co New Glarus WI
21 Great Lakes Brewing Co Cleveland OH
22 Alaskan Brewing Co

I bolded New Glarus because they only sell in Wisconsin and sold more beer than Abita. Which both a testament to their beer and sheer alcoholism that only exist in wisconsin.

In all fairness they have stepped up their game in the last couple of years. They just needed to make a really big step.

And this ain't some NW city, it's Abita freaking Springs. They don't even have public transportation. Being a local business is not how they built that big new brewery. If anything having another option near by might be good for foot traffic at their tap room.

Abita seems to have the space, money, and name to really step up their game. If new commers can make excellent products, why can't they.

I don't think it is becase the can't. I think they got big, made good money, got a hold of the market, and then new breweries came in with fresh ideas leaving Abita behind.

I will say Abita has tried a few good things lately

on one of the FB beer groups, someone posted yearly market shares of the breweries

Abita, NOLA and Convington were all hemorrhaging market shares

I would love to see a non-biased study on how much local and national market share Abita has lost over the past 5 to 10 years.

I honestly can't remember the last time I bought an Abita. I typically only drink them when at a party where the host made a half hearted but uninspired attempt to have some craft beer available.

CSB alert- went to a party at a relatives house recently. My mom said so and so has all kinds of crazy beer for the party. I show up cautiously optimistic. All they have is Mic Ultra and Abita Amber.

Never change New Roads, never change.

Did this count on premises sales?

NOLA does a ton business through their taproom.

Am I reading this wrong ?

yeah sorry, found the charts after I said that

I'd be curious to see 2016 though, since Parish is now in all of LA

Does LA still have the 10% law?

I do like Abita purple haze as an all day drinker in the sun. But now that gnarley barley is canning catahoula common, I have a feeling that will be in my regular summer time rotation

it's a little more complicated now, but yes.

3,000 BBLs or 10%, whichever is greater.

For me, the biggest surprise on there is that Covington has an 11.5% market share.

I met their owner recently. They make their Strawberry beer year round and sell a lot of it. It's 80 to 90% of their revenue.

If Abita made Strawbery Harvest year round Covington would go out of business.

I really like this beer. It will be nice to keep on hand at the house for the non-craft crowd.

What those charts don't tell you is how much local breweries total sales have increased over that time. Breweries could drop in percentage while increasing overall sales.

Covington also makes the Zeas beers, could help pad their numbers. (Pretty sure about that)
