Seems like shitty small town politics. I find it funny that the grocer was surprised it sold after being for sale the last 3 years. So where does the owner of the building go now since the grocer doesn't want to buy it? It would be funny to see them not renew the lease of the grocery store.

Artigues is not a nice store. The towns people will not miss this place if it were gone. It's a place to go to for a last second buy on the way home. No way the town of Abita actually goes there to fill out their enire grocery list. They all drive 10 mins to Rouses.

This has Abita brewery politics written all over it.

Everybody knows nobody does their primary grocery shopping there . It is apace to get a good lunch ,they have good prepared deli foods and you are right it's a place to grab what you need to finish dinner on the way home. If anything the politics were swayed ToWARD letting them operate the brewery, Abita brewing has nothing to do with this. Some people were upset that it went kind of silently through planning and zoning without the type of business the brewery would actually be on the agendas. Now that the people have stood up for the owner of the store he needs to show his commitment by buying the building

Artigue does not have the revenue to buy that bldg, and he never will.

A new up and coming brewery should of been embraced by the town of Abita.

Hammond is pretty close, we will welcome him with open arms. He can even have the old guys grocery store in downtown.

Did you even read the article?
The guy wants to be and sounds like he will operate in Abita.
Besides the grocery store issue there are questions with zoning, and water/sewer usage for that location.

Property owner should be pissed. The grocery store and small town politics are killing his property value.

No one is going to buy it at or near asking price now.

Zoning is a non-issue. It's next door to a bar and across the street from Abita's pub, plus Artigue's already sells alcohol.

I can't comment on the water usage as I am not familiar with Abita's water system (I never did work in that community). My hunch is that it would not be a stress on the system unless Abita Springs' system is just complete crap. If that's the case, Abita Springs has bigger problems.

Sewage can be taken care of on the brewery side by pH adjustments, filtering, and side-streaming. These are things that would be addressed in plan submittals, permitting, and inspections.

Don't meant to pick but this is anti-development NIMBY at its finest. Zoning is fine, its currently a commercial use so if there are sewer/water issues on the site the market would have the same problems right now and the Town should correct the issue if its on their end or make the property owner fix it if its a site issue.

The only thing I've ever bought from artigues has been alcohol.

They do have some good food, but nothing I go out of my way to get.

Abita is dumb for this.

Again, did you even read the article. If so you didn't comprehend it.

Selling alcohol isn't the problem. The zoning classification of light industrial is a issue.

This building sale falling through isn't going to stop the guy from brewing beer in Abita. It sounds as though he realizes it wasn't meant to be in this location and is ready to move forward. In Abita.
