How long does this shot take to start losing. I haven’t eaten a carb in a week and gained one pound. What gives?

its a marathon not a sprint big dawg. its about making healthy lifestyle changes. its not so much about maintaining that whole 'state of ketosis' for a straight week or more, but achieving a state of ketosis at least once every single week for like 3 months.
to achieve a state of ketosis i think you need to go no carbs for like 24 to 48 hours right? they have these little piss-strips you can rig up to ur toilet to check it

If you eat zero carbs and 5,000 calories a day you will gain weight. Low carb seems healthy but it isn’t magic, calories matter.

You probably haven't achieved ketosis yet.

Are you tracking your macros? eating less than 2000 calories?

Also, I recommend integrating intermittent fasting into your regiment.

Maybe I need to count calories. I didn’t think that I was consuming an abundant amount but, maybe I’m consuming too much calories

Download the Carb manager app and input everything you eat and drink.

First you need to figure out your Total Daily Energy Expediture (there are calculators online that get you close).

Next you need to determine how much of a deficit you want to eat (this is a percentage).

Use these two numbers to figure out how many calories you should eat to start.

Enter this information in an app such as Carb Manager.

Tell the app how many grams carbs you want to eat (if on keto, this should be low, such as 20g of carbs).

Next you want to determine how much protein you should eat (depending how much you weigh, 120g or carbs or so should be good) but this can fluctuate a bit and not knock you out of ketosis. You want to eat enough protein that you don't lose muscle mass.

Fill the rest of your TDEE with fat.

Keto is a diet that helps you satiate yourself so that you don't over eat calories. Its not some magical system where eating over your TDEE will allow you to lose weight. Counting calories is still very important.

You can eventually eat "dirty keto" where you only track your carbs and guesstimate your other macros(this is what you're doing right now), but this should only be used once you're very comfortable with a more strict calorie counting diet and you ensure you're eating enough protein and not going over your TDEE.

Food can be deceiving. If you are trying to lose weight and gained a pound over a week, you consumed 3000-4000 calories too many over the course of that week. There's no maybe about it.

I'm in the middle of a long weightloss journey right now that started with keto so I have experienced all of the ups and downs.

I did Keto and one meal a day ( Monday- Friday ) for a few months and lost 55 lbs.

I then quit the low carb and kept the one meal a day ( Monday-Friday) and lost another 10 lbs over the next month.

The conclusion from my diet is that fewer calories matter the most.

If you are wondering about the 1 meal a day, I eat at 7pm Mon-Fri. My body adapted within a few weeks, and I dont get hungry at all during the day. Just a big coffee in the morning that i sip slowly for about 5 hours.

Also, I exercise in the morning before my coffee, and I do eat nuts or pretzels in the afternoon while drinking a few light beers after work.

The whole thing is kind of weird but it works for me.

ETA: I get blood work every 6 months and my Cholesterol spiked while doing Keto. From what I read this is typical though.

You can buy strips at Walmart which you pee on and they will tell you when you reach Ketosis.

You should lose 10-15 lbs the first week or so in water weight, you will start peeing 20 times a day.

I did it in 2019 and lost 37 lbs in six months, unfortunately I gained it all back during Covid and I'm pissed about it.

Keto will also cause your cholesterol and triglycerides to spike

I have been on keto for almost a year now and have lost over 60 pounds.

If you eat a keto diet without cheating you will lose 10 pounds of water the first week. If you are not losing, you are cheating the diet.

When we started, we got rid of all bread, rice, potatoes, flour, cornmeal, oatmeal, starchy vegetables, milk, sugar, candy. We eat meat, low carb cheeses, low carb vegetables. Also drink a lot of water, electrolytes, and some water soluble fiber to keep things moving through us. We also eat a specific amount of fat and protein each day. I personally try to keep my calorie count between 1200 and 1800 calories. depending on your height and weight, your calorie count will be different and must be calculated. People here will tell you 1500 and exercise will take weight off and they are correct. However, I know watching calories and exercise are not for me. I needed more and I can no longer run 7 miles.

Most things have total carbohydrates listed on the food facts block. You are interested in Net carbs, which is total carbs minus the fiber, minus the sugar alcohols. You need to read some keto stuff to understand and work the diet. Everyone here will tell you what to do. All I can tell you is the diet does work.

Go to a keto calculator on the internet and plug your info in and it will tell you what your limits should be.

Load the Carb Manager Application on your cell phone and follow it carefully.

You need to exercise, as in walk 3-5 times a week

Go to reddit and join a Keto subreddit, like ketobeginners or keto. They have excellent advice and good emotional support, as in before and after photos, personal witness and so forth.

Good luck.

I intend to follow some sort of keto diet the rest of my life.

I had the pleasure of having my cardiologist tell me I has lost enough weight. Then the next time I saw him, He told me he was keto dieting and his nurse practitioner was also going keto. You will read people on Reddit saying, they got off their diabetes medication, high blood pressure medicine, anti depressants, etc. Take these statements for whatever you think they are worth.

I have not stopped taking my heart meds and do not intend on doing that. However, I feel better than I have in years and weigh less than Jr. Sr. years of high school. My blood pressure and heart rate are lower than when I started keto, and I like that. I have taken a statin for cholesterol for years and have a perfect cholesterol number.

Good luck.

First, make sure you're truly not eating carbs. I ruined one girls day when she said she's doing keto, but eating apples and cranberries. Second, you lose weight from a deficit in calories. Just because you are not eating carbs, doesn't mean you need to smash every gram of fat in the house. If your body needs 2500 calories to maintain weight, then you need to eat less.

Look closely at what you're eating. Must be some hidden carbs somewhere. You should lose 8-10 pounds of water weight the first week.

Good job MD and thanks for sharing your experience. I’ve been thinking of doing keto lately…

Also came here to say that I accidentally down voted you (on iPhone) and meant to upvote.

Step one would be to look up Dr Jason Fung and other doctors he recommends or that run in the same circles.

Step two would be to never listen to Mingo.

Generally speaking, no refined sugars and breads plus some extended fasting and exercise is it. Just eating no carbs doesn't matter if you're still pounding in excess calories. So start with Jason Fung - The two compartment problem and go from there.
