I have two freezers full of meat and a Weber Kettle. I'm playing around with what kind of charcoal is best for what kind of meat.
I kind of like briquettes because they are more consistent, and easier to hold temps. Maybe there is something about lump that is escaping me, because I'm not seeing a huge difference in taste.

I have in my arsenal at the moment:

Kingsford Original
Kingsford Long Burning
Kingsford Professional
Royal Oak Ridges
Weber Briquettes
B&B Lump

I had Cowboy lump but took it back. Wanted B&B Briquettes, but couldn't find any.

Anything else I need to look at?

Going to use B&B tonight to make pizza. Need it hot.

No Academy Sports stores near me. A couple of places here in Indy carry B&B Lump, but nobody carries their Briquettes, which I've head are great.

Have you used the professional yet? They are having a pretty good sale right now.

B&B is very good. I use their bigger char-logs in my Santa Maria to get it started. I also like Fogo a lot but only order from them if it's on sale.

Yes I have. Where is the sale? I bought two bags from Costco for $14.99. That's why I have it.

I haven't used Cowboy in many years, but I tried another bag recently. I'm not impressed. I may chunk it and find some Royal Oak or another brand of lump. From what I've always heard, Royal Oak is the same as BGE, just less expensive.

Was using lump for years, but got fed up with the inconsistency. Bought a bag of Kingsford 100% Natural Hardwood Briquets from Home Depot. Lights fast, burns clean, gets incredible temps. Staying with it. And, I use a kettle, too.

Having used them all, Royal Oak seems to burn cleaner and gives a nice smoke. I never measured, but I feel like there was less ash, too. That's pretty much what I use exclusively now.

Because I'm new to charcoal grilling and trying to find out what I like.

My favorite, so far, is Weber Briquettes, but they are too expensive.

Not sure where you can find it but, Nature-Glo Natural Wood Lump Charcoal from Royal Oak is about the best I've found.

It is all I use in my gravity fed.
Really smooth burning thin blue smoke after about 5 minutes of lighting. It's made with oak & hickory. I've never added wood chunk to the ash box but it imparts the right amount of smoke flavor.

Speaking of ash box, I rarely have to dump the ash box more than once in a typical 12hr smoke.

I get it from US Foods but I'm sure you could find some if you do some research.

Fogo Premium, Rockwood, and the Komodo joe big block are all in the upper tier of lump.

Royal oak is pretty good for the price, B&B is solid as well, but I do tend to get little sparks on occasion.

Cowboy is awful and should never be considered. Just grab a pallet from the store and burn it instead. Way too much dust, crumbles, trash, and things that just aren’t charcoal in the bag.

Biggest difference in lump vs briquettes is going to be the fillers used to shape and bond the man made product. They will be more uniform, however lump should burn both cleaner and hotter.

Weber briquettes are far and away the best. Especially when they were $11/bag at Lowe’s. I wish that would happen again.
