I have two enamels from Sam's. Super cheap <$100 for both, 5+ years on both. Don't abuse your cookware and you will be safe.

Serious Eats has a detailed comparison that echoes many of the points made in this thread. LINK

Winners: Le Creuset ("The price is high, but Le Creuset has never failed to make the purchase worth it.") and Staub (dark interior noted as hindering keeping an eye on fond; "a solid bet with a reputation for durability")

Budget models: Martha Stewart (cheap, heavy, recalled in 2011 for cracking but since "switched to a new Chinese factory") and Cuisinart ( third to a quarter of the cost of LC, but some reports of chipping)

Tramontina also "a very solid choice."

I have a LC dutch oven. I use it all the time. I used it twice over the weekend. Once for smothered chicken and gravy and then for chili. It is the most versatile piece of cookware I have. It's my go to tool. I think it is worth the price. I have had it over 10 years.

But that's the thing. I do abuse my cookware, and LC cookware has held up to everything I've thrown at it. My little 5 qt dutch oven has been my kitchen workhorse for the past decade.

Sams has a great deal right now on two enameled pots.

dont do it. i bought one last year from sams (even posted on this board about it) and a year later i can tell you its a shitty enamled pot.

it perma-stained after i made a few pots of jambalaya inside and out and even with steel wool the stains wont come off.

i guess it does alright for cooking but man it looks like shite.

Regardless of what brand you choose, no kitchen should be with a dutch oven.

I honestly use mine for 75% or more of the meals I cook. They are so incredibly versatile. I'm not sure how I managed before I got one.

Don't know where you are in Georgia, but there's a Le Creuset outlet store at the Outlet Shoppes of Atlanta in Woodstock. They have 30% off of a $150+ purchase right now.

Thank you very much. I believe it's the 9 qt according to their website. I will look on the bottom of the dutch oven tonight and see if I see a number.

Nope I was wrong. It has 28 stamped on the bottom, which means it's a 7.25 qt.

You are not supposed to buy a dutch oven. You are supposed to inherit it from your mother or grandmother.

Just watched the latest episode of Cooks Country, and they tested several to see if any could, compete with the Le Creuset, their longtime favorite.

They slammed lids (some models flaked),considered handle design, considered weight, etc.

The winner was the Cuisinart at $122. It was deemed an acceptable and affordable alternative to the $350+ LC that they love.

Don't give budget gifts. If you can't afford to give the best Dutch oven, give them the best of something else that you can afford.

There is no difference in quality IMO. I've been to the plant in Tennesee, each piece is basically hand made the way they did 100 years ago. They made civil war cannons and irons along with skillets. All materials melted in their furness is screened for toxic metals and chemicals which doesn't happen in China and other countries, life time warenty w no issues ever if there would have a problem. I have three Sizes and they are awesome.

Was looking at getting a Lodge enamel dutch oven to give to a family member for Christmas, but the wife is worried that it might come off as a cheapo gift.
First world problem.

I'm sure if this person doesn't have a dutch oven, a Lodge would be a very welcomed gift. I use mine all the time.

Staub 4qts are on saw right now everywhere. I got one on eBay for 89.99 shipped. Seemed like a great deal. I think the sale might end soon tho so if you’re interested I’d do it now.
