If you think it's better that's an opinion. If you think it's "not even close" then you probably have not dined at either one. And Bernadettes is up there with both of them.
I have been to all 3. Latil's>Mason Lacour>Bernadettes. Just thought Bernadettes was okay. Mason Lacour has great food and service, but no where near as nice food creativity, plate presentation, atmosphere, wine list....ect as Latil's. Just my opinion.

Latils Landing is first class,no reason to go any further. It is a must try, then if you want N.O. for variety, you can put that in the rotation.

I think you've got the wrong guy. I didn't have anything at 1.

Why? There aren't many places where one can go on a tour of a great plantation with over $8,000,000 worth of antique furnishings, have drinks in a cool bar, and have an extraordinary dining experience.
I love going to New Orleans to eat. We do it quite often. The experience at Latil's Landing is great though. You won't be disappointed.
As was mentioned by others previously, eating there can be done for far cheaper, we just wanted to have the experience of the tasting menu and wine pairing.

What would be the nearest place to spend the night in this area? Anyone know of a good bed and breakfast or decent hotel in the area?
I still remember a meal my wife and I had at a plantation home in Natchez 10 years ago. The food was not anything great, but having drinks in the courtyard/garden area and then dining in this old house is something I will probably never forget.

For those not familiar with the location, the restaurant is set in the Houmas House Plantation LINK . There are, I believe, three small dining rooms, inside the main house and set to the rear. The room where I have always eaten has 7-8 tables and candle lit. The owner is a guy from New Orleans and the bar tender was telling us that all the money he makes, he is putting back into the property. She said there was talk of him buying the one of the river boats (possible the Delta Queen) and turning it into a bed and breakfast. You can also have a group tasting menu at the main dining table.

I know they have a cottage on the grounds, but only for one couple. Not sure on the price. They probably have some bed and breakfast type places in the area, but I'm not familiar with any.

There isn't a place in New Orleans I'd go to over Latil's. Not strictly for food, but the whole experience.

I'm a big fan of Houmas House. Got married their. Best steak I've ever had was from HH which wasn't expected. Pumpkin Bisque is great. Grood atmostphere, the grounds are amazing, and the Turtle Bar is awesome place to forget about everything else in life.
Chef John Folse's Lafitte's Landing in Donaldsonville. Not far from Houmas House.
You can stay at Houmas House, no bead and breakfast though.

I agree, except I never noticed the canefield hallway or it never stuck with me?
And its Kevin Kelly FYI, esp if this is on their fb page now.
