I went to the Mary Lees on Highland last summer and I swear they heated my kolaches in a microwave. I almost told them to forget about it.

Shipley Do-Nuts has good kolaches, but they are wildly inconsistent. Sometimes they’re on a pillowy bread, like cafeteria rolls. Other times, the bread is over baked.

Pretty standard practice for a donut shop. Make the kolaches ahead of time and warm them up when ordered.

I mean. The kolaches are sitting there behind the glass in room temperature. Do you not want them to be warmed?

I can say that going into business is not easy. Kudos to them for giving it a shot, and dealing with all the BS employee issues that arise with it. Calling out of work, no shows, and still have to pay all your chart of accounts day to day.

It’s tough, and most are to scared to ever do it thus they work for the man, and are their bosses bitch. Great Job to Will, and staff for taking the leap most will never dare do!

Pack all of that into a gas station side room.

The replacement at the Bocage location, Chicky Sandos, has like 4 menu items and they are executed very well. The place is 10x busier than I ever saw kolache kitchen. Great example of how to run such a small shop.

they will not be the last small business to flounder because they didn’t focus on serving a specific need as profitably as they could possibly do. Obviously they had too much overhead for the plan they chose to succeed

A business’ job is to make money. Specialty and trendy food items are tough. For those who can make it happen, I agree, kudos.

A lot of hate on this board for corporations, processors, food distributors, etc. But many of the companies some posters love to hate on are the ones doing business for decades.

Definitely sad they are closing, used to love the one on Nicholson.

When they decided to expand to New Orleans and changed up the menu there was an obvious drop in quality and the added menu options weren’t very good.

this new spot on Lee Drive, Delicious Donuts.

Delicious Donuts has a great boudin kolache. Their glazed donuts, when hot, rival ML or KK.

My only issue I have with Chicky Sandos is their checkout procedure through the drive through window. They literally handled me an iPad like device, that was connected to a cable and the cable limited the distance of the device being able to sit in my hands to sign the device.

And of course, I had to go through the question of how much I wanted to tip --- for a drive through.

Shipleys are way better than KK ever were. At least the one at Florida and Lobdell.

Every POS system has this built in now. Truly, I do not understand why people will actually get upset (not accusing you) of seeing a preassigned tip display. EVERYONE knows that these are now built in and chosen specifically by every restaurant. You can always choose no tip or custom tip. It's not that big of a deal.

You're getting the iPad because that's how all those systems are bundled now. I'm sure over 90% of the city uses Toast Tab as their POS software and I have yet to see a Toast system not only include these tips but also force everyone to use their tablets. It is what it is at this point. It's more efficient for the businesses to use them.

As mediocre as their kolaches have become, they’re still better than literally any others around Baton Rouge. If I am wrong, please direct me to where to go. I haven’t found a single kolache worth trying again outside of them in BR.

Will have to try them out. I'm mainly loyal to Lucky Morning Donuts on Nicholson/Gardere. The beef sausage kolache is solid.

Every business owner wants to pay their bills, the problem is they start to run out of money to pay those bills. Thus going out of business. It’s usually how it works when you go under.

Truth is Kolache's suck.
They are terrible tasting. I would prefer to eat pretty much any other kind of breakfast food instead, including Pop Tarts.

This isn't Texas. This might fly as some type of delicacy in Texas, but here in LA, where we have cuisine standards, Kolache's are garbage.

I don't like to see any businessman go out of business, but I could have saved him a lot of money if he had just asked. My heart goes out to him and his family.

Should have never expanded beyond the initial location or expanded the menu to dozens of items.
