I buy individual knives. I like different brands for different things.

I'm planning to get these 2 knives for myself after a ton of research. Not a set or anything, but some nice individual japanese forged knives.

I picked up a set of shun premier on sale a while back and they are great. It took some time to get used to Japanese knives coming from German, but are a nice set. Also look great which never hurts.

I'm gonna second the Wustof brand. We have a set and its a champ.

I never understood the value of a quality chef's knife until i really started cooking at home more. I wouldn't think twice about dropping a few hundred on a really good knife that will last forever basically

Shun is great. I just sent mine off for sharpening after 8 years of use. I'll never go back to German again

Indeed. They are light with an extremely sharp blade. With German you have to put pressure on the blade when cutting, whereas this you have to let it glide. It was an adjustment, but it's much easier on the hands and cuts better IMO. When strength is needed though the German blades are better.

I too have a set of Wusthof classics that I've had for 15+ years and they're still going strong. If I was buying a set today, I would give Shun some serious consideration.

I recently found a steep discount on a Calphalon Contemporary SharpIN 18-Pc. set. Love it. All but the steak and bread knives have self-sharpening slots. The knives provided are great sizes, and the shears are awesome. Cuts right through duck bones.

my henckels have been going strong for 20 years now. better thing is to teach your wife how to sharpen with sand stones. my wife has a crappy 5 dollar walmart knife she likes and i can turn that thing into a razor blade.

Make sure they are quality forged knives. Even the great brands have cheaper stamped lines. If you buy Wusthof, Henckels, Messermeister, etc., get the higher end sets.

For value, look at Victorinox.

Thanks, guys. I'm looking at the Wusthof Classic or Classic Ikon (forged) sets. I may have to look at the Shuns to supplement it as a stocking stuffer.

I've had some Mac Pros that have held an edge well. Just pulled the trigger on a smaller Henckels pro chefs knife so the wife and I can prep at the same time.

If she is going to use them correctly, shun is a good brand. Those japanese knives won’t hold up to abuse though. She can’t go trying to punch through bones with them and trying to stab pickle jar lids after watching tik tok videos. They will chip/break.

If she is not going to use them correctly, stick with German knives. People have already said wusthof in this thread. They are a solid brand. They handle abuse well. People recognize them as quality. They feel good when you use them. They keep their edge for a long time. There may be better sets out there but wusthof is always a great set at the very least.
