Kansas City BBQ

Taking the family on a road trip this summer and plan to catch a Royals game in Kauffman on the way north. My only experience in KC is with burnt ends at Jack Stack, freight house location. That was a fine meal, and one I wouldn't mind repeating, but I also like to try new things. What's everyone's suggestion for BBQ in KC? Arthur Bryant? Joes? Gates?

I agree! You can't really go wrong with either of them.

Which one do they scream at you at? I was disturbed and then aroused and the BBQ actually seemed to be unusually good afterwards.

Well, count Joe's out. We will be traveling through on a Sunday and I now see they are closed on Sundays.

Arthur Bryant's was very good several years ago when we went.

Gates. Really good burnt end sandwich though. Jack stack is solid. My favorite is the ribs at Oklahoma joes. Arthur Bryant’s is mostly hype imo

County Ice House serves Joe’s BBQ and is open on Sunday, FYI.

Jack Stack is really good, IMO.

The trio plate at Jack Stack is the best BBQ ive ever had on one plate. One Crown Cut Prime Rib, Baby back ribs, and burnt ends with 2 sides. It’s called Jacks Best.
Cant go wrong with Gates.
My buddy from KC says Oklahoma Joes is the best and is better than Arthur Bryants as far as the food goes. He says Arthur Bryants is just cooler.

I enjoyed Arthur Bryant’s many years ago

Don’t go to Arthur Bryant’s. It’s all hype.
Some of my favorites include: Q39, Slaps, Jack Stack, Joes.
Q39 is a newer place and is super popular in town. I liked it, but not as much as the others I named.
Slaps is on the KS side and less known, but it’s probably my favorite place. They have great sandwich specials and sides.
Joe’s is 1a to Slaps for me. Best ribs I’ve had at a restaurant. Also the Z-Man is an incredible sandwich. Sliced brisket, provolone, onion straws.
Jack Stack is a more formal, upscale place on the inside, but they still have great food. I’ve never had a bad meal there. Huge menu that is more than just bbq.
Burnt ends are the best part of KC bbq to me, so wherever you go try them out. One thing I haven’t loved in KC is the sliced brisket. I’ve never had anything that rivals central Texas brisket.

I got to KC once or twice a year for Chiefs games. Joes and Jack Shack are the best in my opinion. I'd make a reservation for Jack Shack though as every time I've tried to go there without one, it has been 1.5-2 hour wait.
Joe's is usually quicker, but you're gonna be standing in line the whole time. For this reason, my go to is County Road Ice House. It's a collaboration Joe's did with someone to do a sports bar. Real nice inside, lots of draft beer including a decent selection of local craft. Most importantly it serves everything that's on the menu at Joe's. They also have a lot of other stuff on the menu all using Joe's. Pulled Pork jalapeno poppers are great, burnt end tacos, green chile cornbread. It's hard to get away from their ribs though. Best ribs in KC in my opinion.
Hard to beat a place to get beer, great bbq, and catch all the baseball and football games on.

quote:I agree with this except I get the lamb ribs instead of baby back.. And they've got some cheesy potato side that ridiculously great.

Another vote for SLAPS. It's great. Take a bottle of their sauce home.

Thanks for all of the replies. Sounds like it’s hard to go wrong with any of them. May head back to Jack Stack.
