Hey I was born there and moved away in the 70s. I go back several times a year.
IMHO, Author Bryant's, is the best, they invented beer can chicken in the 20s, I get their beef and pork combo with hot homemade fries and a teeth cracking Bud. Beef and pork combos are a KC thing, not the greatest family place though. Most unusual sauce, gritty and spicy w celery and paprika. Do not get anything to go, they use the KC traditional butter nut bread as they want you not to taste the bread only the meat and the bread melts with the sauce on it if it is to go. It's a huge sandwhich that few can handle.
Mcgonigles on Wardparkway is prolly underrated and is really really good, best meat market in Kc, better for family if you can eat outside. Brisket, combos or sausage sammys are in there. Get some steaks to take home.
Gates, 103rd st, in Kansas, best Gates," may I help you please""know for the short end ribs and great. Best Bar b que sause, I like extra hot and its heated at the resturant. Famous bar b que. good for families.
LC's off 470 N, really good KC Barbque but not really a scenic area? They don't have pickles or onions available which I had a problem with. Great sandwich thoufgh and really good sauce.
Jacks Stack used to be Smoke Stake, more famous for beans than any thing else, families are welcome, OK IMHO. Martin city location might be the one.
Joes, probably the most over hyped place because of the advertising they do, it's a place from Oklohoma and not Kc BarB que in my mind. Family oriented and just plain.
Q39 new and I don't know it it it is supposed to be upscale not family, spendy pricing but sounds great.
The sleeper is Sneeds down south in Belton. Had Burt ends in the 70s, they called brownies, great sliced beef sammys and they raised their own beef. Good fries. Sauce was smoked in their smoker.
I used to compete in the large Bar B Q contest called American Royal in the 90s. Best finish was 9th in some category I can't remember.

quote:LC's used to be my favorite about 10-15 years ago. It was a hidden gem. There really seemed to be a major dropoff in quality last time I tried them. Seems the meat supplier changed.
