The old Chelsea's will become a new restaurant that will feature a local "rock star" chef and a cocktail bar with live music. Kalurah Street Grill will open in late fall in the former Chelsea's Cafe space at 2857 Perkins Road. The restaurant is named after the street that runs between the building and the Bet-R Neighborhood Market.

"I envision the menu showing great emphasis on seasonal produce, Louisiana seafood and game, and beef and pork," McCann said. "I've always enjoyed light, crisp and bright flavors in my cuisine, and I would like to showcase that."

Design-wise, Kalurah Street Grill will have one grand entrance. The cocktail bar with live music will be on the left-hand side of the building. The kitchen will remain in the middle, and the restaurant is on the right.

The cocktail bar may operate under a different name, Watts and Hughes said. The idea with the bar is to open around 4 p.m. a few nights a week and have live jazz music.

"We're just trying to do something different," he said. "There's a popular sentiment in Baton Rouge. We always talk about wanting to be something else, or how Austin or New Orleans has these great things. Our thought is 'Why not do it now?' Let's do some of those great things in Baton Rouge."

Guy Fieri is the only rock star chef in America. That is a fact. Lucky BR.

ETA: The best quote of the piece "We don't want you to feel like you're in Baton Rouge."

And then in the next sentence, "We're just trying to do something different," he said. "There's a popular sentiment in Baton Rouge. We always talk about wanting to be something else, or how Austin or New Orleans has these great things. Our thought is 'Why not do it now?' Let's do some of those great things in Baton Rouge."

Not bitching. I just dont understand why any developer would say something like "We love this town and are going to open something that makes you think you arent in this town"

This could be someone in New York, Dubai, or New Orleans. It makes no sense to me.

Hopefully it's a concept with some character and a fun place to hang out, or even better, take friends who come to town and visit.

BR is slowly graduating from grungy sports bars it seems. I'm hopeful.

I am as big a fan of Baton Rouge as anyone but I have to agree. What we don't need is another place with cement floors, crap beer and bar food. I love that type of place but we have those covered. Give me a place to chill, listen to some music and eat some decent chow. It's not THAT radical of a concept.

You should also hope that if this place becomes popular for one month that they don't start immediately thinking how they can open one off Coursey and in Prarieville.

Funny how every time someone in BR tries to make something that isn't shitty, the Nola crowd shits on it. BR ain't my favorite place in the world, but good on this guy for doing something different and offering an alternative. BR lost a treasure when Dave shuttered Chelsea's, and at least it isn't being replaced by a mediocre sushi joint or Walk-Ons.
