Someone on TD recommended the supplement Citrus bergamot and I think it really helped my numbers. I only took it for 6 months prior to my last blood test but they were better than my appointment the year before with basically the same diet. I have an appointment in January so I hope it confirms that hypothesis. The reviews for it are amazing too so I think it was the cause but it takes more than one blood test to confirm that.

Eat less fat

That's false. Italians and French eat more fat than we do, but are much healthier. It's the type of fat. There are many. Check out the book, the Secret Life of Fat.
My dad had this same issue, got a little chunky at 195lbs, I got him on Keto (which means a lot more fat in the diet) for 3 months. His cholesterol went down bigly. And he got back down to 170lbs.
He went keto, watched/maintained his macros, and did an hour of walking a day (sometimes 2 30-min walks, sometimes a full hour)

Good post and I agree with all things posted. Alcohol sugars will mail you on tryglycerides. But the research seems to suggest that if you are good on blood glucose levels, triglycerides aren’t as big a heart issue as cholesterol. Remember that the brain needs glucose and fat. The heart doesn’t.

I got this news earlier this year. Teachers get a free wellness exam and I’m pretty sure my cholesterol test sent off alarms at BC/BS in Montgomery.
My “good” cholesterol was great. My cholesterol overall was as 256. I don’t have a horrible diet and I exercise regularly. I drink a lot of diet sodas, so I’ve cut back on that.

Reduce intake of animal-derived foods (meat, eggs, and dairy). This will help cholesterol a little but not the best bang-for-the-buck. For triglyceride reduction, reduce fat in your diet and eat foods high in fiber
This is horrible advice.
OP, cut out all sugar and carbs from your diet. Follow a ketogenic or carnivore diet. Your triglycerides will go down quickly.
The “bad” cholesterol isn’t really true. The only metrics you need to worry about are getting triglycerides under 100 and your triglycerides to hdl ratio under 2.0.
If your triglycerides are really high, ask your cardiologist for a calcium score test. It’s a great baseline metric to track over time.

Add Fiber to your diet around 20 grams a day

Keto-yes. Sugar buster-yes. But if that doesn’t bring it down enough (total cholesterol below 200, HDL raised to 40 or above), then a STATIN should be considered. Maybe a low dose of generic Crestor or Lipitor.

You don’t have to eat oatmeal. Giving up carbs is more important than giving up fats. And you need to get on meds. A statin for cholesterol and another for triglycerides. This is what I did in 2012 when I got stents for blockages and haven’t had a problem since. Low fat diets don’t work…..low carbs and sugars is the way to go. This is what my doctor put me on. Have bacon and eggs for breakfast.

Forget the fish oil. After taking for a while impurities in them built up in my liver causing elevated liver enzymes. I quit taking fish oil and in a short time they dropped into normal range and have been ever since.

Anything else y'all do that might help save me from eating oatmeal for an entire year?
Largely depends on family history and age. My family has shite ton of heart disease and high BP in conjunction with high cholesterol and triglycerides. Several have dieted and taken vitamins that some research shows to help, but it did not help. A few years ago I myself dieted for over 6 months and exercised and lost 20 pounds and kept it off while taking fish oil, red yeast rice, CoQu-10, amongst other shite and my levels stayed the exact same for my next labs. The only thing that has helped is medicine from my cardiologist. 3 years later I'm at same Cardiology Institute of the South but my last appointment was with a new Doc since my old one left, new Doc recommended Fish & vegetables only and even stressed less fish the better. Also wants me to get under 200 pounds, but I weighed 195 graduating high school 20 years ago.
My brother lost 100 pounds and is still on meds.
All that said, absolutely diet as best you can and exercise to be as healthy as you can. But I would temper expectations on how much it will affect your labs.

In fairness, you’re still fat, so I’m not sure what you expect. I’m not sure what your weight in high school has to do with anything.
How much does your brother weigh now?

Potatoes get a bad rap. Almost zero fat or cholesterol, and many vitamins and minerals. Again, it’s usually what we put all on top of things that ruin it.

Take Metamucil every morning. Will drop your Cholesterol and also has the added benefit of reducing your toilet paper budget.
Agree with poster advocating cutting carbs and sugar. Go Keto

There's a drug that contains the good from fish oil without the bad. If your insurance covers it, try it.
Otherwise it's too expensive to take like an OTC vitamin.
Vascepa.
quote:
What is the difference between Vascepa and fish oil?
The main difference is that Vascepa only contains eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), whereas supplemental fish oils contain both EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). By only containing EPA, Vascepa reduces high triglycerides without raising levels of “bad” cholesterol or LDL-C.
Vascepa is also a lot stronger than most over the counter (OTC) fish oils (up to four times the strength) and much more expensive than OTC fish oils, costing around $300 per month without insurance. Because it is prescription-strength, it is only available on a prescription written by a doctor to people with abnormally high triglyceride levels. This is because it is more likely to cause heart rhythm disturbances, thin the blood or increase the risk of bleeding than supplemental varieties. There is also more data to support the effectiveness and safety of prescription strength fish oils compared with OTC varieties.

I ditched fish oil a couple years back and it didn't change my cholesterol a bit. I even started searching for higher quality fish oils but at the end of the day I think most of them are crap.
I started taking Crestor and lowered my total to the low low 100s but my joints from my hips to my ankles ached like crazy. I eventually cut down to 3 times a week and it was ok and I was still in the lower mid 100s and then cut down to 2 times a week without much change in my totals and none of the aches at all.
