re: Is the new Los Reyes on Lee the best Tex Mex in BR?

You may have a point. Blue corn may be a little more expensive but los Reyes' prices have definitely gone up over the past year or so. I would say their prices are on par with at least superior. In my opinion, if I'm paying the same price between Los Reyes and superior, I'm going to go to Superior. It's a better livelier atmosphere.

I would say their prices are on par with at least superior.
Superior Nachos 13.75/17.25
Chimichangas 14.25/19.95
El Paso Plate 22.25
Sizzling Fajitas al Pollo 25.75
Sizzling Fajitas al Carbon 30.75
San Lucas Sizzling Fajitas 31.75
Like i said i love superior... but their pricing isnt on par eith Los Reyes.... Maybe that one combo plate but there will be an upcharge to change anything to steak putting it +20% over los reyes. but LOOK at those fajita prices!!!!!! thats what gets me with superior and fajitas are on my "do not order at superior list.".. 26 for chicken fajitas, 31 for steak, and 32 for both. Last time my wife got that it was like 3 pieces of each.
Again... i love to go to superior... Try out their puffy tacos... nothing like a real putty taco but more small taco salads but they are great.

I've only had the tacos at Modesto. Haven't tried anything else but if their food is close to the level that their tacos at I would say it's pretty great for BR.

A la carte is the way to roll at Superior if prices are a concern. 2-3 tacos or enchiladas would fill most people up and they’re like $3-$4 each. It’s once you get the plates with the rice and beans that you’re paying stupid prices.
Lunch menu runs til 4 and it’s the same plates at a lower price.
Winter menu is out right now - the Korean beef lettuce wraps and the pineapple chicken skewers are both great.

yep. I love Superior but their prices are unbelievable

I've had Tex-Mex in Houston and found that it's not much different other than the bean and beef quality is much higher. At the end of the day 90% of the plates use the same ingredients just organized different.

you are right on that one. Fajita prices are crazy. I find that is somewhat commonplace among most tex-mex places. The only way I am paying that is if me and the misses split an order.

Superior has a great atmosphere but the food is very inconsistent and nothing to brag about.
We tried Los Reyes once and it was dead, but I thought the chicken dish I got was better than the chicken I got at Superior. It wasn’t dry and rubbery. If was tender and well seasoned.
You guys go to Los Reyes. Give it a better vibe. Give it some energy and maybe I can talk the Mrs. into going back.

For me it has always been El Rio Grande on Airline.lol. I remember when I moved to BR, I started a thread on the it way prior to the plethora of boards....this was 2006ish. A lot of people recommended el rio grande so I went.....their salsa was freaking pace pincate sauce.
El Rio Grande is so bland and mediocre that I have to believe that people are recommending it sarcastically like OT’ers do The El Cid when someone’s looking for a place to live. Unseasoned ground beef, watery nacho cheese that aspires to school cafeteria nachos quality, and jarred bulk mild salsa.
El Rio Grande is on my shitlist of bland, terrible BR restaurants that seem to survive on nostalgia and inertia alone, joining the likes of:
Druscilla Seafood
Dearman’s
Jay’s BBQ
Po’boy Lloyd’s
George’s
The Pastime (although really just their pizza is bad. The rest of the menu is actually solid)
To contrast, Superior actually has pretty good food, it’s just too expensive.

That's how I feel. I think the food may be better than Superior but the atmosphere is dead.

I can't speak to Government, but the chicken at Highland is not this at all. It's one of the most solid things they serve. You can cut it with a spoon it's so tender.
I don't love Mexican food and don't think Superior is anything mind blowing, but every time I've tried the grilled meat options at other Mexican restaurants since going to Superior often, they don't hold a candle.

I’m not professing to be a Tex Mex connoisseur because I don’t eat that much out.
I have found Superior inconsistent. Good yes, but not good also.
I have tried a lot of their fare with mixed results. I find something I like a lot only to be disappointed next time.
But I want to be clear about one thing, the margaritas never disappoint.

The margaritas are the only reason I go to Superior on occasion but only during happy hour. There too expensive outside of that to me.

tortillas and salsa are the biggest indicators of tex-mex quality. If those suck, then you know the restaurant is cutting corners.
Kinda like how quality bread makes the po-boy

The one on Coursey was very good today for lunch. Seemed better than the last time I tried it.

I never understood this complaint with Superior. People have zero problem going to a cocktail bar and spending $12-15 on a cocktail. No problem going to a nice restaurant and spending the exact same and those drinks are probably a half to a third the amount of the Superior margarita.
Went to Eliza the other day, which is praised on this board. Ordered the margarita. $14 and no one bats an eye. This shite might fill up a Superior cup 35-40% if that.
Fill up a Superior cup at this place, Hayride, or any of the nice restaurants in town and the drink would be $30+.
Dont get me wrong, plenty of the prices are outrageous at Superior. The margarita shouldnt be one of them

You don’t hear me complaining. Two are plenty enough for me anyways.

I guess I’m cheap but I don’t normally spend that much on a drink out but, I don’t go normally go to cocktail bars. If I’m not mistaken, a margarita outside of HH at Superior is like 18. I just think that’s pricey to spend for a drink.
Posted on 12/1/23 at 11:40 pm to Bryno1960
I hear you. $18 is pricey for a drink but you get a lot of drink there relative to pretty much any other restaurant.
Fwiw, I dont drink them. I drink the overpriced beer
