There are at least a half dozen top shelf joints I can attest to (Truth, Pit Room, Killens, Roegels, Corkscrew, and Pinkertons). And another group that gets rave reviews (Feges, Blood Bros, Tejas, and Daddy Duncan).

Great time for BBQ lovers in Houston.

No, you aren't even where people think to go when you say Texas BBQ much less represent all of the different styles of BBQ.

If you are in Katy, give Bretts BBQ a shot was impressed. Thought the Brisket at Bretts was better than pinkertons.

I don't know if it will ever be the BBQ Capital but it has improved a ton in a short period of time.

I was lead to believe the correct answer is Brooklyn.

Regardless of the moniker or not, there is no questioning the number of joints putting out first class grub. It's impressive.

The Sulphur Dioxide bubble they live in down there makes seeing beyond le Grand Parkway impossible.

I don't know for supreme capital. It would be whatever your regional preference is most likely. The article posted above makes some good points for Lockhart for Texas.

Just having good BBQ isn't enough, you need to have the history and brought something to the table.

20-25 years ago yes.

I love Kreuz for nostalgia, but BBQ at places like Franklin's, LaBBQ, Valentina, Pecan Lodge, Pit Room, Pinkertons are light years ahead of the places in Lockhart.

Yeah, tastes change and places don't keep up, but the history is still there. Like Memphis BBQ, there isn't anything in Memphis I really would say gives it superb BBQ. Can get their style better other places now, but it will always have the history and worth a visit. Think you need a mix of both quality and history for the title.

Capitals aren't always the best places, look at Baton Rouge, lol.

Yep.

I should've mentioned it in the OP but Btrett's being such a hole in the wall didn't.

Have eaten at Black's, Kreuz's, and Smitty's. All good to great.

But if you want to find great BBQ, Houston is now a better destination than any other city (maybe Austin, DFW withstanding).

FTR, most of the joints doing it well are strongly influenced by the Hill Country tradition of post oak and dalmatian rubs. For example, Brett's BBQ Shop is a disciple of Mueller's.

Houston wins in a landslide over Lockhart.

All other things being equal, history might tip the scales.

But things are no where near equal.

have been to lockhart a few times and tried out the historical spots

they were good, and would be considered bbq history and royalty

but bbq as a whole is being served on a whole new plane and level now, and that's not even being disrespectful to the elder spots.

the abundance of really good, quality BBQ in the houston area is just awesome.

Yeah, you guys aren't really nationally known for it but yet are trying to claim capital. Continue the Houston circle jerk though. You have some decent restaurants, I still find it funny you include Killens. I got sent there and wasn't anything grand.
