I'll keep those in mind next time I go whiskey shopping.

The old fashioned was created as a way to make shitty whiskey taste better during prohibition. So you're really going to miss out on the complex taste profiles that most Bourbons/whiskeys have to offer if you rely on it too much. But if you do, make sure to use a good rye otherwise they'll suck, I like redemption rye or maybe Sazerac.

I would suggest starting with a heavily wheated bourbon on ice as an intro and move to standard and rye as you progress. Something like WL Weller (green label) is a really good starting point.

Monkey Shoulder blended scotch. No ice. Room temp. It's the poor man's Hibiki.

If you are going Old Fashioned, just don't overkill with the simple syrup. Skip adding fruit or you may get judgement from your OT peers.

Explore that category. There is a profile for everyone. Too many people just end up buried in what they think they like.

This. Try all sorts of whiskey/whisky/bourbon/etc. Try them different ways. See what you like.

And if, after you've tried it a few of them a few different ways, you still dislike it, then maybe it's not for you. That's fine; find something else you like.

Don’t use a $100 bottle for an old fashioned, but that’s about it. Drink what you want and everyone else can frick off.

The proper introduction is in the LSU student section from a smuggled in flask. You get so drunk your date leaves you at halftime. You wake up the next afternoon reeking of sweat and vomit.

Old fashions are great, but I typically drink my bourbon on the rocks (no adders).

I really like Bulleit. Not overly expensive, but not cheap tasting either.

I've also been introduced to Buffalo Trace recently, and have enjoyed it also.

I find Irish whiskeys to be much weaker than their American counterparts. But if I do go Irish, I go runn of the mill Jameson.

Connor McGregor's Proper 12 was very meh, I don't recommend it.

Old fashions are good but if you like whiskey neat or on the rocks it can be a little sweet

So I used some Four Roses Small Batch in this Old Fashioned I'm drinking, and I have to say, uh, it's fricking delicious.

I stopped in Ruston where in laws live at a restaurant called Utility Brewing

I’ve been meaning to stop by and try this place out when I’m up visiting again. Used to frequent the revelry (rabbs when I was in school) the stow, que stick, library lounge, and wilmart (RIP) back in the day.

I ate at raw and ponchatoulas pre Covid quite a bit

If you have any 60%+ bourbon, it makes a fine drink.

Reminds me of a real sidecar.

I don't like Old Fashions, but I like whiskey. I don't like over complicating any drink with whiskey. Just a whiskey sour, or with coke, or just a chilled straight shot.

I'll have to look through my bar stock.

ETA: I have some Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Cask Strength at 56%, should do the trick.

Utility has good beer and great pizza, one of my favorites when visiting Ruston. Surprisingly RAW is one of my favorite sushi places in north La, pretty awesome place to eat. I’ve only eaten Ponchatoulas once but it was probably 15 years ago. I go to Ruston probably once a month or so, there’s an authentic Mexican place next door to sonic by La Tech that is really good also, new owner and they’ve done a great job, can’t remember name of restaurant.

No, not necessarily. I love whiskey and especially bourbons but can't stand Old Fashions. Not into the added sugar (too sweet) or bitters.
Buy a nice small batch bourbon(Elijah Craig or Woodford Reserve would be a good, easy to find starter) and pour a couple fingers with a few large ice cubes. Let it melt for a couple minutes and then sip it. This will get you acclimated to something new. A good bourbon is smooth and has very little "bite".

I prefer bourbon or whiskey on the rocks but I will never say no to an old fashioned.

Three objective adjectives in one sentence.

I'm kind of impressed.

A "good" bourbon is the one the drinker likes.

There are some very finely crafted bourbons that are perfect expressions of the category that I think are boring as shite.
