Is an Old Fashion a good or bad way to be introduced to whiskey/bourbon?

Went through a liquor phase, had an awful experience, and decided to go beer only. But I've always been curious about bourbon and whiskey and have just never picked any up (wouldn't know where to begin). Was at the inlaws a few weeks ago and my BIL brought over this setup for old fashions, including a way to "smoke" it, which from research is not the only way to do one. They had fruit and all with it.........and it just didn't stick. Taste never set well with me and didn't care for it.

Would you say I won't be a whiskey drinker, or should have some a different way to find out?

Move to the food/drink board if needed. Figured I'd get more opinions here.

TIA

Lol what timing. My dad just popped in and asked me if i wanted him to make me an old fashioned.

They’re delicious and if you think otherwise you’re a communist.

If Covid wasn't the issue, I'd recommend going to a whiskey distillery. I always feel like I enjoy it more when I see how it's made and the company's history.

The "smoke" nonsense sounds like the problem.

Old Fashioned is a great intro to whiskey.

But I'm saying, if I don't like an old fashion, am I simply not going to like whiskey?

If you buy whiskey and don't like it, you can always cook with it or just give it to the next bum you see.

I like whiskey a lot and don’t keep it in the house for that reason, but a properly made old fashioned is a fantastic intro to whiskey.

Problem with a lot of people making them is they depend on the simple syrup to make up for the whiskey or bitters. If I see a lot is simple syrup going in, I know it’s going to suck

Kentucky mule is probably my favorite way to have it overall but that’s more of a nice summer sip.

Bigger problem is you’re not going to a place with a quality bartender to make drinks. Old Fashions are an excellent way to enjoy whiskey for the new whiskey drinker. There’s a ton of personal opinions on the matter and maybe having a highly skilled service industry person who has made thousands of drinks for many different personalities would be a good way to identify what you like.

Old fashioned is a pretty standard go to whiskey drink. If you don’t like it, you may be the kind of person that agrees with displaying preferred pronouns on name tags.

I prefer a Sazerac to an Old Fashioned.

My BIL and his wife seemed to be struggling with the whole process the couple of times I walked by them, so I wonder if they did a crap job of making them.

Pre Covid, I stopped in Ruston where in laws live at a restaurant called Utility Brewing and they made a great Old Fashion and had cherries in it, I like it that way. You can ask for orange instead of cherries there of course, I like it either way. Went back 3-4 months ago or so and it wasn’t as good

Not necessarily. You could be getting a shitty old fashioned. I’ve had bad ones. I don’t like them too sweet. Will often order mine with rye not bourbon.

It's fricking hilarious... Back in the day, nothing but old ladies drank old fashions, now it's hip to drink them..

You could always try a whiskey sour...
