More interesting would be to do a triangle test with someone on a fresh batch of commotion vs the previous batch to see if they were able to perceive the differences without the aid of the canning date.

IPAs certainly peak some time after packaging where they are better than they were when first packaged. That time period is dependent on the beer and hops used and varies greatly from beer to beer. They also fall off at wildly different rates.
Generally speaking, kegged and canned IPAs will hang on longer than bottled IPAs.

My rule is that a hop-forward beer must be dated for me to even consider buying it. I also consider "best by" dates to be a non-date, as that stuff isn't standard (exception to Stone Enjoy By).
For standard gravity IPAs and APAs, I'll give them a month or two before I question their flavor. Higher gravity hoppy beers are granted a little more leeway, but there are still some higher gravity things I won't buy after a month or two.

Batch #8 vs Batch #9
Color - Nearly identical to 9. Slightly darker.
Aroma - Much greater hop aroma in batch 9 than batch 8. Batch 8 aroma is muted.
Flavor - Batch 9 has a greater hop flavor than batch 8. Also, i found batch 8 to be more boozey.

There lots of other factors in evaluating tastes as well like the condition of your sinuses and allergies...what you have been eating or drinking...

It's at the top of the neck in black ink. Thug life.
And it's Julian calendar dated. So 3 digit number that shows what day of the year it was bottled, followed by a single digit that corresponds to the year (5 = 2015, 6 = 2016). It's stupid. Too much math involved to figure out when it was bottled.

Of course they are different from each other right now. Batch 8 is on the downhill slide, even though it's still very good. Batch 9 is starting to hit its peak. So yes, batch 9 does have much more hop aroma and flavor right now. 33 days ago, batch 8 was drinking a whole lot like batch 9 is right now.

Well i got batch 8 about 2 weeks after the release, and i got the same tastes. I'm not saying 8 was garbage, but i don't find 9 nearly as boozey as i did 8.
