no, whiskey is corn based alcohol so its a different flavor to start before the barrel gives it a flavor..

vodka is from potatoes so thats why its so harsh. but that said, i bet if you put it in a charred barrel for 7-12 yrs it would most likely be amazingly smooth compared to any other vodka, and yes it would yellow it.

if you had the time it would be a great experiment to throw a few 5ths in a charred mini keg and see how it comes out

Tito's is made from corn.
Grey Goose is made from wheat.
Scotch whisky is made from barley.
They're defined by the process not the ingredients

Traditionally yes but many vodkas are now made from corn and wheat.

No, it would turn into barrel aged Vodka, which is not very good otherwise, there would be a market for it.

I'm fermenting and distilling grain into vodka. Then I'm aging the vodka in barrels. But now I want to make whiskey. What do I have to do different?

Make whiskey instead of vodka.

I would imagine you would have to distill it before you put it in the barrel. I think barrel aged spirits are cut after aging to bring the proof down, not before.

Use malted grain...

A better experiment would be to take a lesser quality bourbon and age it in the barrel and see how it plays out. I’ve done this with Benchmark. Aged it six months in a small barrel and was actually surprised at how much better it tasted after aging.

That's not completely true

quote:

For a whiskey to call itself bourbon, its mash (the mixture of grains from which the product is distilled) must contain at least 51 per cent corn. The mash must be distilled at 160 proof or less, the distillate must be stored in charred new oak barrels at 125 proof or less, and it must not contain any additives.

No, but it would taste closer to whiskey than where you started.
