I was raised on Steens Cane Syrup. This not a routine LA thing?

From BR. Didn’t even know there were other syrup options until late in HS. This was the standard growing up and still is in my opinion.

Can be hard to chase down here in West LA but I always end up finding it on some back shelf.

Wife had never heard of it and dislikes it. Apparently many people in Lake Charles haven’t.

This still as popular as I am thinking of this just a local BR thing?

Only syrup I really like.

The breakfast diner I go to ran out the other day and I had to substitute regular. Just not on the same level.

My parents grew up in Morgan City and we always had a can/jar in our pantry in Texas but none of my friends liked it. My wife has family from Abbeville and can't stand it. The thought of my maw-maw's homemade biscuits fresh out of the oven with butter and steens wells up a tear or two...

I like Steens. But it’s not as good as Norris.

Friend,

I have never tried it. A chef or two may have snuck some into a dessert over the years, but I was never aware of it.

A little too heavy for me except for biscuits and pecan pie. I have to cut it with a little Karo to use it on pancakes and waffles.

I find this hard to believe. What kind of wierdo grew up in SWLA and doesn't know about Steen's

I've seen it in every store I've ever shopped at in SWLA, although not in LC, but in Welsh, Jennings, etc

Steens in a little yellow metal can, with two triangle can opener holes poked into it: that’s a memory straight back to grandmère’s refrigerator. We used it growing up, but as kids preferred the sweeter, simpler taste of maple for most things. But you can’t make a gateau de sirop without cane syrup.....

Poiriers is tastier than Steen’s tho.

I like to clean and reuse the nice amber glass Steens bottles for cocktail ingredients like flavored syrups.

I grew up on it as well. Ascension Parish over here. I never realized it wasn't a normal thing until later in life either. I have a jar in the pantry at all times. Great with some sausage or boudin.

Still my go to snack.

The wife told me that the pure cane syrup version is not on the shelf at our local store anymore. They have replacing it with Southern Made BlendedI told her don't buy that corn syrup garbage.

I can't even eat the artificially-flavored "maple" syrup (Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, etc.)

Steens is great, but Norris' is even better. I always grab a jar when I stop in at Grayson's BBQ.

I grew up in Abbeville and I can remember the smell when they were making the syrup. Brings back some memories.

We've raised our sons on the stuff, even though we moved from BR to Atlanta when they were 1 and 2 years old. It's on the list of stuff we bring back any time we drive to and from Louisiana. The boys always remind us to get some Steen's to bring home. Usually get around 6- 8 bottles. I don't like the way it tastes from a can.

I grew up in Vermillion Parish and we always had a yellow can with two holes in it covered with aluminum foil. Good memories. I remember taking that can to the head when I was younger.

Baw, a cracklin dipped in Steens is good stuff.

I grew up in Vermilion Parish and we never really had Steens in the house. My grandparents next door always had it though.
