I just found weevils in 15 pounds of basmati rice.

Is there any saving it or should I just throw it out?
Any ideas for storage that can prevent this in the future?

If it was near other dry food - flour, cereal, etc, I'd check those as well.

Thanks, I will tell the Mrs I got the word to throw it out. (Apparently I am married to the only woman under 80 who seems to have lived through the depression.)

Exactly, especially if you have a Costco membership. I usually buy bags of rice in the 25 lb. range.

I store it as soon as I get home in old one gallon glass pickle jars or the one gallon Blue Plate Mayo plastic containers from Costco. You really need to have a container that has a very secure top to them.

I fill them to the top and use them as needed and never have an issue with weevils.

Protein source and rice all in one!

If you have a compost pile, it’s perfectly fine to toss the rice into it, weevils and all.

But definitely go through everything else in your pantry. Pantry moths can chew through cardboard boxes and plastic bags.

I don't think so since we are not married!

My grandfather grew up during the depression and I grew up on his property.

Friend,

I have always considered weevils free protein. They also give the rice a hint of olive flavor when cooked. I rejoice when I find weevils in my rice cannister.

I store rice in the freezer for this exact reason. You can cook it directly from the freezer and there's no freezer burn or anything.

You can store rice in a clean sealed bucket.

My wife is like that. Super frugal. She and her sisters were raised that way by their mom. It's a good way to be, and I'm sure you could eat the rice and not be poisoned. But I would just find it too gross to eat it.

We had to do that too, btw. Had to toss out several boxes of really good pasta and some grits.

Depends, do you mind insects in your food.

Weevils wobble but they don't fall down.

Did they fall down? If so, I would toss.

My parents lived through the depression and even though my Father went on to make a comfortable living and we were totally in the upper side of middle class my Mom would have cooked and served that rice. (My spoiled-rotten arse didn't eat it.)

My mom was a boomer, and just picked the bugs out of the rice. They're not going to kill you.
