You can dress your burger any way you want.

But for me, I have to agree with the OP.

Plain with just cheese is perfect.

I *might* add some mayo or bacon if available, but plain with just a slice of cheese is perfect.

This entirely depends on the burger. A really nicely done burger like Flemings or La Petite Grocery is good with no condiments/topping -- maybe just a little mayo. But a burger from somewhere like Five Guys is better with the works: mayo, mustard, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion. On a little single patty McDonalds burger, I like just lots of ketchup.

I rarely have one, but I also like a BBQ burger that has BBQ sauce and fried onion strings.

I like burgers about 10 different ways. The only things I don't like on a burger are pickles, mushrooms or raw onions (grilled are fine).

I will claim that the simplest toppings are best though. Burgers with guacamole, bacon, pepperjack cheese, queso, salsa, candied jalapeños, pickled onions, arugula, and cotija cheese are stupid.

I don't mind unique toppings on a burger, but I don't like Mexican-food type stuff on it. Avocado or guac would be a no for me. I want it to taste like a burger -- not a taco.

Now, I can do something like pork belly preserves like they have at Curbside.

Ah, yes! We "W girls" used to eat those slaw burgers at Sonny's, too. I can't remember having one any better.

My problem with this is that it's such a strong flavor it would overpower the meat. Same reason i would never eat a steak with it.

Lettuce

Mustard

Ketchup and tomato on a burger is too much.

Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun.
