Asking because last night I realized that I'm not the greatest popcorn popper. Is there a rule of thumb to make sure you don't slightly burn it but don't leave 10 to 20 kernels in the bag? It's feast or famine with my microwave, can't get the right happy medium.

set the time and listen when the popping slows down to like 2/3 seconds and its done. Always some that don't make it. Best if those half pop they are good.

That setting burns the crap out of my popcorn. I have a built in microwave and will probably be a Pita to replace, but I may have to just get a more expensive one.

My popcorn hack

#1 Set microwave for 4 minutes

#2 Listen for the sweet spot, and adjust based on that microwave
Lots of pops = too soon (lots of unpopped kernels)
Almost no pops = too late (lots of burned popcorn)

#3 Save the unpopped stragglers in a RubberMaid

#4 When you have enough stragglers or more free time, pop them the old fashioned way in a pot, with no smoke oil (I use avocado or walnut oil), and enjoy not letting the stragglers go to waste.

I typically just use the stove. The kids enjoy watching them popping, and those little bags for the microwave these days are a mess. But when I do, you can't turn it on and walk away. You have to listen for the 2-3 seconds between pops and cut it off immediately. I'd rather have 20 unpopped kernels than half the bag burned.

No offense, but microwave popcorn has to be the easiest thing to possibly "cook" in the kitchen. Sit in front of the microwave and set the time at 2.5 minutes or 30 minutes; doesn't matter. Once the popping slows down, open the door and eat.

Look and see how many minutes/seconds it took to do that batch. Take a mental note of that and set timer to that moving forward. I recently bought a new microwave and had to reprogram my brain to a new popcorn time.

If the pops slow down to less than 1 per 3 seconds, stop the microwave

Everything on the Whirley Pop I have is dishwasher safe, including the handle. There simply is no substitute for Flavacol and butter flavored coconut oil, topped off with some real butter.

One of the problems with microwave popcorn is that everyone buys a lot of it since it's cheaper by the 20 pack, and then makes a bag of popcorn a week or less. Even in the plastic wrappers, the kernels lose moisture over time, which is why you have to "listen," and there is no consistently right popping time.

This is the way. If you cook until all of the kernals have popped, most of the bag will be overcooked.

Put enough oil in the pot to cover the bottom of the pot
Put a kernel in the pot wait for it to pop take it out.
put enough kernels to cover the bottom then cover with lid
Shake the pot around.
Wait til popcorn stop poppng.
"Take of burner.
its that damn easy.

You know that slit of opening in the top of popcorn bagbthst steam is pouring out of when you pull the bag out of the microwave? Turn the bag upside down and shake it up and down. This unpopped kernels are small enough to fall out. Shake until no more come out, then open it up and pour out popcorn, free of unpopped kernels.

You can put regular popcorn in a brown paper bag and put it in the microwave and it will be perfect.

Start with 3:00 minutes. It will not take the entire 3 minutes. It'll probably take about half that.

The second you hear the popping really slowing down, take it out.

Don't use the popcorn button on the microwave. It's worthless.
