I went to Hawaii this summer and regrettably, I didn't try any bananas from all the road side stands / farms until past halfway through the trip. These half sized bananas were a real treat. I'm not a big fan of the bananas we get here, but wow, these were something else! Much sweeter and didn't have as strong of THAT banana taste. I'm assuming what I was eating were apple bananas. After I got home, I learned that there are around 10 different varieties of bananas there...I wish I would have sought them out while I was there...maybe next time.

I've found a similar variety of banana, called the "Thai banana", that's sold at the local Asian market. This is all I'll buy now as it is hard to go back.

Has anyone tried the other types of bananas there? How were they?

That`s fricking bananas!

I never figured they tasted that much different. I`ve tried the organic ones and they tasted better to me than the cheapest ones in the store.

On Maui they call all of those small bananas apple bananas. They might have different types or variances but they were all marketed as apple bananas.

For sure. Their mango was also some of the best I’ve had.

Interesting fact: they are all clones.

Yeah, once you go this direction, you can't go back to the generic Cavendish. Sweeter, more dense, and they last a lot longer too.

Fun fact: Almost all pineapples grown in Hawaii are consumed in the islands. Also, Hawaiians salt their pineapple the way some people salt watermelon.

When in Maui I got a slice of pineapple with about anything I ordered. I ate it every time bc of how sweet and crisp they were.

I later learned that here in the states we get our pineapple mainly from Mexico.

It is shite in comparison.

Tons of fruit and vegetables for that matter don't have a shelf life and spoil very quickly once picked. Same thing here. Groceries can't hold them for 4-7 days for the time it takes to pick and logistically get them around.

South Florida has some fantastic fruit also, mangos especially.

It's also why lettuce is so much better in California than anywhere else by the time they ship it and sell it at stores

Apple bananas are amazing, I really like them when they are super ripe.

Also ate a blueish banana called an ice cream banana there. They tasted almost like vanilla

Damn right! They are best that way. Super creamy. They take longer to get a foul taste.

I remember my friend calling me from Hawaii after he went on the Dole Plantation Tour, telling me how amazing the pineapple was, one of the best things he ever tasted.

Any pineapple is delicious if ripened properly, Mexican or otherwise.

The reason you probably don't like pineapple you eat state side as much is because it's rarely if ever ripe and here's why. They pick it green and pineapple stops ripening once picked.

Pineapple eaten where it's actually grown is like fruit candy. It's always ripe.

It’s because they are vine ripened and not transported halfway around the globe

I’m in Maui right now. Those “apple bananas” as they call them are the shite. Pineapple too

My dad is a banana expert and gets them from all over. He loves these
