I recently visited both of these popular and hyped restaurants.

And if I am being perfectly honest, based off of my one and only experience, I don't get the love for them.

Gus's chicken was fresh, moist and hot - essentially cooked to order but in terms of flavor, I would gladly take Dominque's Stockyard Cafe, Delpit's Chicken Shack or most Popingo's locations scattered throughout the BR area. Each of these locations serve just as good, if not better, fried bird.

As far as Central BBQ is concerned, I had the (3) smoked - naked - dry wings. No flavor whatsoever and the chicken was dried out. Would not order again.

Also had the half rack of ribs. Ribs were moist, meaty and pulled apart relatively easy. But they had zero flavor. None. And I am not a sauce guy, but found myself having to use sauce to doctor them up.

Say what you will and many will knock this comment or down vote my post, but TJ Ribs baby back ribs - and while they are no where close to BBQ, they have 10 x the flavor of those that I had at Central BBQ.

So all in all, my unprofessional one time visit to these Memphis institutions - save your gas money if you're from out of town - and just enjoy the great food we have here in Baton Rouge.

Which Gus’s did you go to? If you weren’t afraid you were going to get shot, you weren’t at the right one.

I went to Central BBQ and was surprised how unimpressive it was.

The meat was flavorless and so dry that it was chalky.

Was it smoked?

Did it have any flavor from being smoked?

The first time I ate at Gus's, it was a near-religious experience. In all my times eating there, it has never failed to impress.

Memphis BBQ as a whole is vastly overrated.

I'm glad I went. But I am not in a hurry to go back.

Germantown Commissary was actually my first choice, but Central BBQ was just down the road for an event I attended, so it was selected by default.

Interesting.

I can't speak to Gus's but I absolutely loved Central BBQ. Which one did you go to? I went to the OG location and it was probably the best BBQ I've ever had. Tried a little bit of it all, including wet wings. Honestly, the wet wings are still my favorite wings I've ever had in my life. I call them 'life changing' because they were just on a whole other level.

In regards to Gus’s, I respectfully disagree. It is easily some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had, and I’ve been to multiple of their locations.

I do agree that Popingos has great fried chicken though.

I thought Gus’s pretty much lived up to the hype though I may have been to a place or two with better fried chicken. I agree about Central BBQ, it was good but not great.

Fried chicken and BBQ have a ceiling on how good they can be. Of course it's going to be over hyped

This. You reach a point in which how "good" a place is comes down to how consistently they can put out a product at or near that ceiling. Beyond that, it just comes down to personal preference. The arguments I've heard concerning the thickness of fried chicken batter/crust...
