I like Gus’s. It’s just spicy fried chicken tho.

Im n Memphis for work a good bit... hit Central twice and couldn’t care less for it. The owner was behind the bar when I went one night, and it a super nice guy. We had a local ipa and chatted for a bit.

Germantown Commissary is good, but I prefer BBQ Shop on Madison to both. Their pulled pork w Dancing Pig Is solid.

I know Rendevous is looked as a tourist trap, but their Lamb Riblets is my fav bbq item n town.

Why? Does the chicken taste different there?

It’s meh, hugely overrated.

I stopped by central one day when passing through Memphis. Got a rack of ribs and was not impressed. Mine were pretty dry and lacked any flavor. I had to go pretty heavy on the sauce to doctor them up.

If there was a gus’s In Mobile I would happily die of a heart attack at 60.

Central is over rated as frick. But I felt that way about most of the bbq places in Memphis. The Commisary place was pretty good tho.

Ribs are too easy to make at home....and smoked wings from Moes BBQ shite on any wings I had in memphrica.

When it comes to fried chicken, I’ve had it all: Willie Mae’s, Chicken Shack, Dominique’s Stockyard, Lorman Country Store, Uncle Lou’s, Two Sisters in Jackson... if a place is well-known for fried chicken, chances are I’ve been there.

Gus’s is the best I’ve ever had.

I don't know what to tell you about Gus's, but it definitely beats all the popular chain joints and all the buffet joints. I haven't been to the places you reference as better.

Regarding Memphis BBQ in general, I have never really had ribs or wings better than what I make at home. The main thing I believe Memphis is better at than most other city BBQ scenes is the pulled pork. Hard to find bad pulled pork in Memphis. I travel a lot and compare other places and most of the time I get some kind of sloppy joe sauced pork crap or over dried tough flavorless pork. Memphis does it right. You ordered wrong.

It's not the original. The original is not from Memphis but a town north of Memphis. I forget the name.

I thought Gus’s was pretty good. My personal favorite fried chicken is Willie Mae’s Scotch House.

Central is certainly hyped up. To me the very best BBQ place in the Memphis area is right across the border in South Haven, MS and is called Memphis BBQ Company. That Melissa Cookston has won Memphis in May probably 3-4 times and has also won around 10 world BBQ championships. I absolutely loved her ribs and chicken and even the brisket was good which is unusual to find good brisket in Memphis.

INTERSTATE BBQ.

You go there for the food; not the ambiance, décor, or fast and friendly service.

Speaking of fried chicken, Hattie B's in Nashville lived up to the hype for me. Really good stuff.

Hattie B’s is good too. I would order the medium next time though. That hot one lit me up for about 2 days.
