I don't think that's it... growlers are legal now in EBR, you just have to have a retail license instead of or in addition to on-premise.

Any place like Whole Foods or Calandro's already has a retail license, it's just a matter of the equipment.

My guess is that places like that just don't want to deal with it.

Gotcha. I think I misunderstood the question anyway.

Side note: When is Baton Rouge going to get a convenient, high profile place that does growler fills? I was in Houston a couple of summers ago and there was a place that did nothing but growler fills -- they must have had a couple of dozen different beers on tap to fill growlers with. There's a grocery store in Waveland, Mississippi where they have taps of six or so beers to fill growlers with. I'm talking good stuff, like Crooked Letter Brewing beers. I keep waiting for Whole Foods or Calandro's or Rouse's to jump in on this.

FYI both Chimes locations and Corporate Brew and Draft will fill growlers. Both Chimes recently added a crowler machine as well.

Love this. Over time, more places should start doing this. If nothing else, it helps taprooms turn over their kegs much quicker, so their beer is fresher and customers will have more choices.

Far less intelligent people than Jay have learned the "restaurant business", and rather quickly I might add.

Sounds like a cool endeavor

I believe Red Zepplin fills growlers.

I know Hocus Pocus does but Prairieville and all.

Pretty sure they do.

Tin Roof taproom does as well.

I know there are bars that fill growlers -- I think Red Zeppelin pizza does fills too. I'm talking about more of a retail outlet. I want to get a growler fill while I'm buying milk and bread or picking up stuff at the liquor store.

Like you said, people want to pick up that growler while grocery shopping, and that has been successful at the high end grocers, like Whole Foods, so it's spreading to places like Fred Meyer (Portland's version of Walmart), and now I even see growler fill stations at some AM/PM Marts. Fill up with gas, pick up a growler. This seems to be a growth area for craft beer. The more convenient it becomes to acquire good craft beer, the more people will drink it.

I can only assume that none of them are willing to make the initial investment + deal with employee education.

I could see it working at a place like Bin-Q or Martin Wine Cellar more than a grocery store.

I would like this if it wasn't the same beer collecting dust on the shelves. Would be really cool if I could buy beer to drink while I shop. We have silly laws, I can drink beer on my walk to the grocery but can't buy beer to drink while making groceries.

Whole Foods had plans to when they renovated, but had to scrap it because of something in their zoning for that shopping center. I can't remember what it was, but it was something dumb similar to why Panera Bread couldn't open up in the same development.

Maybe be due to lease restrictions with the developer?

They already sell retail alcohol for off-premise consumption.

Unless I'm wrong about that being what's required.

More than likely this.

I still don't know why they would be allowed to sell bottles and not growlers... that doesn't make much sense to me. I can see people having issues with them pouring pints to drink while shopping, but not growlers to-go.

Hi. It's the Big Mouth guy here. So...what kind of insight would you have into my friendship with Jay or about me in general that would make you think my association with him would be a bad thing for his business?
