It’s absolutely respectable for a city it’s size.

The number of votes for a chain steak house as a top 5 in a city of 725K would say otherwise.

Care to expound.
I would have thought we’ve had enough long time interaction here to warrant more than a personal snarky comment with zero substance.

would it be fair to say that the restaurant scene in BR is at least respectable?

Yes - and I think there are chefs/owners/restaurateurs that are out there who want to make it more respectable.

The citizens of BR need to help with that and quit going every where for cheap alcohol.

You have based your remarks on a college food board and of the responses 5 have mentioned a chain steakhouse.

And while it is a chain the Ruth’s Chris Baton Rouge location is the first franchise and locally owned since it’s opening. And for a steak it’s probably a top choice in most cities it is located.

Implying this is a handicap to a restaurant scene is disingenuous as I’m sure this particular chain would be picked in most cities of size it operates in, as it has a loyal following, and a large portion of any cities dining public are steakhouse eaters.

Of all the restaurants mentioned in this thread in this city exactly how many have you dined in?

What the frick does this even mean?

I’d challenge you to go through the restaurants listed in this thread right now and try to get a reservation tonight. You won’t get much.

Calm down - my whole family works in the hospitality industry all over Louisiana

My point is BR is a weird town to have a restaurant in. People either go to the next new thing, until there’s a next new thing - or keep going to the same old places even if they suck. There is almost no in between.

When there’s something new and innovative - people jump on that but it never sticks.

The food culture in BR needs a little bit of changing - and it’s getting there.

As for the reservations - a lot of that has to do with the fact that places are short staffed right now bc they’re not at full capacity. Of course Beausoleil will be packed tonight - because it’s ‘new’.

Most of the restaurants listed have been around for years so I’m gonna disagree

Everything you have stated is generic and applies to all cities, specifically cities of this size. BR isn’t an outlier and if your family is in hospitality all over Louisiana you would know that.

Your point of people going for cheap alcohol is rather halfwitted. Do you think all diners in Baton Rouge are Greek pledges?

Baton Rouge has a solid list of good restaurants of many different cuisines and always has. Some come, some go just like anywhere else. It’s not New Orleans, Houston, Austin nor does it ever aspire or pretend to be.

Pole dancing is part of the hospitality industry. What’s your families take on tit bars?

That they should be fully opened for everyone to enjoy like everything else should be

And on a more serious note:

Frank Stitt has done some wonderful things in Birmingham - I think BR could be more like that. BR could also be more like Austin - although I’m not necessarily in favor of that. Especially since plenty of people visit bc it’s the state capital and LSU/Southern. I’m not saying BR has to be NOLA - but where is the fine dining? There are so many possibilities because of the type of town it is - but they seem to be lost.

The people getting cheap margaritas at the several restaurants that I know of are not Greek Pledges. They might be parents of Greek pledges.

You have to realize - just because you do not act that way - doesn’t mean others don’t.
