I was out last night, drinking beer and shooting the bull, when I decided to order a Ghost in the Machine to mix it up.

Mind you, I’ve had it plenty of times before and never noticed anything, but this go around it was notably harsh going down and sat in my stomach like ball of hot iron. Not pleasant.

A little internet digging seems to refer to this phenomenon as “hop burn” and an unfortunate side-effect in the growing NEIPA craze. Anyone else noticed this in their Ghost beer (or other beers for that matter)? Or did I just have bad luck?

Sounds like you should just stick to wine cooler, Daisy.

Don’t worry, Parish makes those too. It’s call a Sips.

You don't have to drink super hoppy-arse beer to be cool.

Envie is just as tasty.

Parish puts out plenty of good stuff. I’ve had Ghost multiple times, Envie, Canebrake, etc. I’m not some newbie to craft beer. It was just a recent bad experience I thought worth bringing up.

I probably just got a bad/overfresh batch.

The late June batches are super boozy, I wish they’d go back to the batch 4 recipe

Last pack of Ghost I bought, I had to drain pour most of them because they tasted like rubbing alcohol with hops.

So yeah...something is off.

Never experienced this with Ghost. Hop burn is the result of oxidation in beer as a result of dry hopping. If you dry hop in large quantities, Oxygen enters into the system via the hops.

What i find strange is that hop burn seems like a new thing. Someone reported on it, and then it took off and now there are multiple articles about "hop burn". I don't know if it's a fad thing, or it's just something that went under reported do to the style being relatively new.

I do get a perceptive bite to Bloom, Nova, and Envie. I always attributed it to over carbonation but it very well could be "hop burn". Or it could just be my taste buds have shifted again.

Except I’m paying between $11.49-11.99 per 4-pack. If it was $14.99 plus tax, then yeah, I’d pass as well on it other than maybe once every few months.

What you seeing it priced that high?

Maxwell's Market on Perkins by Pennington Biomedical (I know this place is usually more expensive than most). I do like the strong kick that Ghost provides though. Usually feeling pretty good after a couple.
