I searched for a fruitcake thread and did not find one. Who eats it? Who has the best?

Personally I grew up eating fruitcake as my grandmother made them every year for Christmas. However, I know many people cannot stand eating them.

My wife brought one home from Costco and it was not bad.

They are an affront to cuisine. A defect on our American palette

I'm going to have to take up arms for team "fruitcake is an abomination".

My mom loves the stuff, but my dad's smart like me and hates it. If love for fruitcake has a genetic component, it can't be a dominant gene or X-linked.

I’ve had some good ones including Collin Street Bakery. I like to cut slices and brush with butter, toasting in the oven. Top with leader or unleaded sweetened whipped cream or ice cream.

That's about as good as a fruitcake can get.

I haven't eaten a piece of fruitcake in decades, but as a kid, my mom seemed to have one every year around Christmas and I really didn't mind them.

They were a little dry due to the density of the damn things, but the candied fruit and other sweet ingredients were not bad tasting. I remember eating pieces of them with a big glass of cold milk to wash it down.

I may just have to head to Costco to give one of theirs a try.

Mom makes her into cookies. Same recipe as used in cakes just dropped by the spoonful onto cookie sheets and baked for about 10 minutes.

She has them as her afternoon coffee snack around 2:30 after reheating them.

The cookies aren't bad, much better than whole cake. Cookie style comes out crunchy rather than cake moist/soggy.

There’s a local company in NOLA called Baker Maid. There Creole Royale fruit cake is really good.

I’ll have to try the Costco one. I’ve made a few myself, then soaked/aged in booze... but it’s a process.

Collin Street Bakery does a damn fine job

I really like their “Pecan Cake” variations like the Strawberry, and Chocolate Cherry Pecan cake.

Also, everyone seems to forget the tradition of soaking fruitcake in rum, or other spirits. Great stuff

Completely agree. I have learned to double up on the brandy when the fruit soaks.
