Fish fryers recs and discussion..

My father's day present was a fish fryer. Kinda. It was the green light to get me a fish fryer. I want a 4ish gallon one. The two common ones I've seen around here are the Bayou Classics:
and the R&V
The R&V is about a $100 more than the BC and about $50 more than I wanted to spend. But I think they are heavier built. Anybody got a preference, opinion, complaint about these two or know of another brand I need to check out? Tia

Never used a Bayou Classic so I can't say anything about it, but the R&V is a well built piece of equipment that has never given me problems.

I've had the heavy one. It is a work horse. Some SOB stole it from the duck club last summer.
I want the light weight one. Easier to handle and I hear they work fine.

Yea, several buddies have the R&V and they are badass. I would rather save the money if the Bayou Classics comparable. Just don't want to buy something that's crappily built.

Bastrop Feed and Seed has them for $240. Pretty good deal from what I've seen...

I have two of the R&Vs, the two basket 4 gallon and the three basket 8 1/2 gallons. I've had them for 6 or 7 years. They're frying machines, heavy duty and I've not had any problems and/ or complaints w/ either of them. Easy to clean and maintain. Cleaning the baskets is the biggest chore but that's gonna be with any basket. I've recommended them to a number of friends, who have bought them, and they're all just as happy with theirs as I am with mine.
I've no experience with the Bayou Classic but I would recommend the R&V.
I'll be happy to answer any questions, you might have, if I can.

The man at Golson's store outside of Sterlington said he's sold a bunch of them with no complaints. He said they heat quickly since there isn't as much metal mass to deal with. I plan on getting one.

My dad has the 2nd one. We had a fish fry last night. That thing is a beast. Especially if you have a lot ppl to feed.
Only complaint is that it holds four gallons of oil. And oil ain't cheap.

I have the R&V 6 gallon one. It's a bad mofo and higher quality than anything Bayou Classic could ever think of putting out. That being said, I wish I would have gotten the smallest one they make. (2 1/2 gallons I think) I never come close to frying as much fish as the this thing can turn out. I bought it because you can fry a turkey in this size, but that's not something I do very often.
That being said, if you want a 6 1/2 gallon, I'd trade you for a 2 1/2 gallon.

R&V bro. Have 2 basket at home and 3 basket at the camp. Only way to go. Bayou classic is the fisher price version

How many pounds of fish can you fry in the R&V at once?

I've got the Bayou Classic one and it's fantastic.

Just curious but what do you do with all oil when your done? Filter and save it for next time? The commercial fryers that have the built in filtration systems are badass. Drain, filter and refill the fryer. I hate frying simply because of the hassle of cleaning the fryer and filtering the oil.

Sorry for the newbie question, but is he advantage of one of these worth having a separate piece of equipment vs just using a burner and cast iron/ stainless pot? For those of you who have dedicated fryers how often are you using them?

Yes you will. We have one f these at the fishing camp. We hosted a fish fry for 40-50 people last month. The fryer kept up all night with Trout Bandit working the baskets.
