We have discovered a new option in the Jackson area that we really like.
If you are familiar with the 49 highway area in Jackson/Florence, just Past Jerry's Catfish place is a big butcher shop that has a really good pork sausage. They make several flavors of the product and sell it through the butcher shop, Kroger, and Walmart. I understand it might not be available in all areas. If you see it, give it a try. We really like it.
If you go by their shop on H-49 below Florence, they have lots of good stuff there, in addition to the sausage they make.

Completely un-level playing field relative to the others being discussed.
I started the thread and was saying what I normally use if I can get it is Kartchners or Rabideauxs. Not comparing to the store bought's. They are night and day above the others mentioned. Kartchners uncut bacon is unbelievable as well...

A good many competition jambalaya cooks use Veron’s and I’ve always found it to be very consistent. And pretty widely available around Baton Rouge. If you are in South Baton Rouge, Alexander’s house made is quite good, and depending on your dish, about half the diameter of Veron’s if you’d normally cut the Veron’s slices in half.

The sausages I stay away from are the store made Rouse's and Mr T's..
I like Country Pleasin and Conecuh and a few others..
I have been going to Sam's because they offer a variety that you can't get in the grocery stores.. Polk's cajun is good but very greasy. I put it in the oven and cook off the grease. The Sunset smoked sausage out of Georgia is pretty good and not greasy. You can get 5lbs for $14.00.

Conecuh
I like it, but not for Cajun dishes (red beans, jambalaya, gumbo, etc.).

At one time, you would be right. They are very inconsistent now. One pack will be fine and the next will be greasy and give you bad heartburn. Rabideaux's is better for RB&R now.
I only use Conecuh for grilling or breakfast. Never for use in a dish. And it has always been greasy to me. Some maybe more than others, but it definitely leaves grease on the plate. They have a hot variety too that is pretty good. I grew up in that part of Alabama, so we've been eating it all my life.

The only thing Double D is good for is Red Beans and starting fires on the BBQ pit. Too greasy.

Agree. Great with bbq dishes (wonderful in bbq beans) and for snacking.

Conecuh is greasy gump sausage unfit for use in any dish. It’s too greasy and imparts a weird flavor that dominates whatever you put it in. It is Ok grilled or split and cooked in a skillet. That is all it is good for.
I’m a big fan of Rabideauxs smoked sausage

Local small grocery called Port Vincent Village Market in Port Vincent about 10-12 miles south f the 1-12 walker south exit has the best store made I’ve ever eaten. No fillers. Smoked just right. Use it for everything- grilling, jambalaya, gumbo.
If I can’t get theirs I’ll get French Settlement.

I’m from here and I agree. But fresh off the grill and sliced up while you’re grilling the main course, it is a great appetizer.

You have chosen wisely.
If you have to resort to mass-marketed products, then New Orleans Smoked (Hogs for the Cause) and Tony Chachere's are your best bets.
I have tried almost every one mentioned in this thread with a few exceptions. And IMO, the Cajun Prairie is >>> the River Parishes for sausage. Heck, if you live in BR, no excuses for not making the drive to Kartchners.

Veron's Supermarket in Lutcher.
This Xs 1000. The Veron's in all the stores comes from River Parish Meats. It's good, don't get me wrong. But it can't beat the original. Do yourself a favor, go to the store in Lutcher and talk to the old guys in the back.
Ask them about the Veron's in all the stores. They'll tell you.
Couple side notes:
You can get your complete jambalaya order filled there. Temple meat, smoked sausage, onions chopped, everything. Call with your order and they'll do it all.
Also, go around lunch time. Get your Veron's then head over to Jenny's Poboys. They're right behind the police station. They have some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. I've never seen anyone getting a poboy...always chicken.
