Where were the scallops sourced from? Any idea
Restaurant Depot freezer.

2Johns steakhouse in Bossier has the same special every single time I’m in there: “Filet Oscar with 3 jumbo shrimp”. The only thing is the crabmeat with bernaise and 3 jumbo shrimp are both listed accompaniments on the regular menu. So all they do is market it as a “special” even though it’s always available on the menu. Also is like $65. Love the restaurant and always have good meals there, just always thought this was funny.

Never mess with the special in BSL or PC. Made that mistake once: Bacchus in PC which I really like. $43 for soft shell crab and cheesy pasta. Wanted to punch the waiter.

The Sycamore House is the best value for fine dining, but they rarely do specials.

Not sure if you want to name the place...
Was it F.N.’s new place?
Curious cause we may be visiting the MIL this weekend.

Yea, I know no place on the MS coast is sourcing scallops worth a hoot. Thought this place may have came across some nice ones somehow and were marketing them as such

Had almost the same meal last night here in Birmingham at Satterfields and paid $30.

If I am interested in one of the specials, I ask, “How much is that ostrich special?”
I don’t think I’ve ever been with anyone else who was smart enough to ask. But we often laugh about a friend who got rung up $$$ for some mahi topped with crab and berries. It was about double what everything on the menu cost.

I'm not sure that this is the typical meaning of a special. Usually, it's something off menu that is in limited supply that the chef/restaurant picked up from one of their food suppliers, or possibly a local market and is prepared in a manner that is not typical of other menu items.
I’ve always thought that the special was something they concocted to clear out some ingredients that were on the verge of going bad.

So I was discussing this topic with my wife and she actually reminded me of a time this happened to her.
For her bachelorette party they all went to Napa. After a day of wine tasting they were obviously very drunk but had dinner reservations. The waiter told them the special was a black truffle pizza. Well it was about 12 drunk girls, so naturally they got 3 of them to share as an appetizer. The waiter never told them they were $75/each. So the bill was $225 before they even ordered drinks.

Damn, that’s a way to get a $0 tip.
I like the place, and our meal was good. Y’all been to the new place in town?

Nah they tipped appropriately. Can’t blame the waiter for doing his job when they were too drunk to ask a simple question. Plus, it was a pizza covered in black truffles, a reasonable person would know to expect it to be expensive.

My BIL used to work at Traps, and he’d tell people the crab cake app was $18 because he got stiffed when a table got pissed at his silence.
Posted on 5/31/19 at 9:26 pm to Gaston
Sounds like your BIL had a bunch of a-hole customers. Would I be annoyed if I ordered something expecting it to cost a certain amount but later discover it was much more? Sure. But it’s also a lesson learned - just ask. Can’t fault the waiter in that scenario.

He worked there before the storm, and the clientele varied wildly.
Y’all eat out tonight?

Just a snack and a couple drinks after catching a movie.

If indeed you ever go back, raised holy hell the bartender about their bait and switch before you order your first drink!

$40 for scallops isn't too bad. Charlie G's gets $33 for theirs, and there's only three.

You absolutely can fault the waiter for not sharing an important piece of the equation- especially if widely out of scope with expectation.
Just cause someone doesn’t proactively ask doesn’t mean they should shock them when a receipt comes out. I firmly believe there’s an obligation from the wait staff side there

Napa...black truffle
As someone stated, they're in Napa ordering black truffle. There should have been no surprises.
Good thing they weren't on the Vegas strip with a waiter spieling the A5 Wagyu with black truffle special.
