Just about everyone is selling that crap now. As long as they don't say catfish on the menu I guess they can get away with it.
Even the bean counters at Acme convince the owners to switch to the fake catfish a few years back

I would guess the majority of restaurants selling "fried fish" are selling swai. I've noticed most that sell catfish make a point to list it as catfish on the menu.

I mean, crappy to lie...but if it tastes the same I wouldn't really care

Yeah Acme is all about that good New Orleans food as their marketing so it just aggravates me that they sell Asian fish

Catfish is shitfish, so what they are using instead cannot be any worse.

Nobody can tell the difference between Basa and US catfish so it doesn't matter

bullshite, maybe my tastebuds are sensitive to it but I can tell , and I much prefer US catfish, specifically wild caught

This is not a limited problem. Grouper is very often fake as well. The problem is, it's tough to tell where the fraud occurred in the supply chain.

In New York, students did DNA testing of purchased sushi and retail samples and found that among other things, 78% of red snapper was a far cry from red snapper. In December, non-profit ocean conservation group Oceana had released a report titled “Widespread Seafood Fraud Found in New York City.” Their more extensive study found that 39% of Big Apple restaurants and retail fish sellers committed fraud, as did every single one (100%) of the 16 sushi restaurants tested. Boston and LA fared even worse, with fake fish rates of 48% and 55% respectively.

"This is something that our food distributors sell us, and they sell it all over as catfish. … Why was this never called out for any of the other restaurants that are all doing it in the area?"
bullshite. How could you be in the food business and not know this is a controversial issue that's been going on for years? I refuse to believe they were that dumb about their industry.
As for the other restaurants, name names. The law should write their asses up too.

Asian catfish called "swai"

That's pretty much everywhere. Unless it specifically states on the menu "Louisiana catfish" then they're using swai. If it just says "fish" on the menu, it's swai. Same premise as serving Chinese crawfish, because they're cheaper. It's a damn shame, but so many naive people out there just assume they're eating Louisiana catfish.
I was in Biloxi this past weekend and was served "grouper." I could tell right off the bat it was swai, but I ate it anyway because I should've known better.

Every time I go to Restaurant Depot, I see people in chef outfits in the checkout line with cases upon cases of swai.
But yeah most places now just say "fish".

That's so sad in a state like ours.

I don’t know why they use it since US farm raised catfish doesn’t cost anymore and the majority is raised close by in Mississippi and Alabama.
And farm raised US catfish has come a long way in taste. They are fed with floating food so are not bottom feeders which keeps them clean.

You are correct, farm raised catfish has come a long ways. It used to be a fatty mess. It isn’t as good as river catfish but it is a much better product now
The feed must be better. It has always floated, but the nutritional component must have changed

People act like these fish aren't catfish. They are Siluriformes just like channel and blue, just in a different genus. Also, Basa are vegetarians.
