Do You Rinse Your Rice?

Growing up my parents would always rinse the rice before cooking unless we had Toro brand rice. I've found that it makes the rice much better tasting and soak up gravy better. Is it all in my head or does washing the rice really have that much of a difference?

I wash and rinse twice.
No rinse for jambalaya.

Never.
I don’t think it’s necessary today.

I always rinse until clear. It rinses the outer starch off and makes it less sticky.

Only thing I really rinse are the beans and dirty ole potatoes.
Rice and most other stuff is fine.

Never. You’re rinsing off all of the vitamin fortification added to the rice.

I don’t eat enough rice to worry about the vitamins I’m washing away with the starch plus they are added after the rice is milled anyway as mandated by the government. I don’t like my rice sticky and rinsing eliminates that.
Now having said that I’m referring to long grain typically used for rice and gravy, gumbos etc...
Risotto never, as most other short grain rice I might cook for various reasons.

Yes and it washes some of the arsenic off too.

I pour it from the bag into the measuring cup and the into the pan. Then I add my 2X water and a little salt and pop it into the microwave. Why would I wane to wash it down before cooking it?

My mother always boiled it like pasta and drained in a colander and I followed that for years. But now I just add water one finger digit above the rice, bring to a boil, reduce to lowest it will go, cover and wait 20 minutes. Works every time. I’ll add a tablespoon of butter too.
I watched BugAC’s cousin dump a 5 lb bag of rice in a shrimp pot, water an inch above and cook. Came out perfect and I’ve never seen anyone cook that much in my life. He didn’t rinse but it was an impressive feat. That was the second pot because his gar ball stew is incredible and the first pot went fast.

I always rinse my rice before cooking. I'm not sure what pre-rinsing is.

It makes the rice more fuffy and less sticky.
But, that said, I don;t eat much rice. Pics I post with beans or gumbo a lot of times have no rice.

Unless the recipe says to rinse the rice, I don’t fool with it. Although I read somewhere that cultures that eat a lot of rice, like in Asia, they always rinse rice and think we’re dumb for not doing the same. On a similar note, I’ve heard cultures that eat a lot of beans, like in Latin America, think we’re dumb for soaking beans overnight

I always rinse my rice until the water runs clear.

Yeah
But you have to ask yourself if the way you are rinsing it makes any sense
Putting it in a colander and running some water over it isn't doing anything
You have to rinse with your hands in a bowl of water several times for it to be effective

My mom always raised her rice too and the she added a touch of vinegar to the water before she put the lid on the pot
