It's always been considered a side dish.

It would help if people stated where they are from, too.

Everyone from the Acadiana area considers this an entrée, not sure why this is such a crazy idea

Neither, really... I would say it's a component of the main dish.

Right? When I have rice and gravy, the meat that was used for the gravy served on the rice and gravy.

The powers that be really don't like the idea of getting the OT perspective on other board specific topics.

Some times it makes sense to me. Other times it doesn't.

I think we already have a thread about this. But:

Sunday lunch in Baton Rouge at G'ma's house after Mass in North Baton Rouge was lovingly called "Roast, rice n' gravy". The side was either broccoli and cheese casserole, or green bean casserole (probably other variations, but these I loved the most). Some crunchy garlic bread and my 10-year-old self was sopping up the cast iron pot after everyone was done. Those are good memories.

So, rice and gravy is implied as the main side to a meat, but is the favorite part of the meal. So, I guess that is why it is used as a "main" course.

Also, rice and gravy should grammatically be "are" but we use "is" because they are one thing.

Growing up poor, it was an entree with small chunks of meat

It's fine, it can taste good, but it's totally unnecessary and I'd rather eat better things with my calories.

Coming from a Cajun family outside of Lafayette, this is how I describe it.

If we were Indian we'd call it curry, if we were Italian-American we'd call it spaghetti... It's assumed that it is a dish that incorporates meat of some form and several variations exist

In other words we said we're having rice and gravy for dinner all the time... It was implied there be some type of meat which would affect the type of gravy

Nobody I know eats rice and gravy without some kind of meat. It's sort of understood that some kind of meat is served with it so I say entree.

this, 100% this

growing up if dad said he was cooking rice and gravy that meant smoothered round steak with gravy, it was just understood. in general though he would just say rice and gravy and it was understood it had a meat in it to make the gravy. not like he was gonna make the gravy from a package or something.

i mean how the frick else do you make a brown gravy if you dont have meat?

I grew up in Lake Charles and Lafayette, and rice n gravy with an accompanying protein IS the real deal. When I lived in New Orleans, it wasn't as revered and treated like a mere side dish. I say it's an Entree' and also folks in Atlanta don't know how to make a pot of rice.

I use a rice cooker for rice when making a large quantity. Perfect every time, stays warm and doesn't take up a burner when making a large meal.

I’m from Alabama and we don’t use the term in the same way. For me, rice and gravy is a side. My granny often served it with fried chicken. Or you could get it at most any meat and three. The gravy wouldn’t have steak in it.

What you are calling rice and gravy, I’d call smothered steak. Some people would say gravy steak. Or beef tips with gravy, depending on the cut. It is usually served over rice but sometimes with mashed potatoes instead.

It’s good, whatever you call it.

Here they are on the menu at City Cafe in Northport.

Rice & gravy is the side. Beef tips and rice is the entree.

a side entree

I'm not from Louisiana so I'm guessing my experiences are different, but growing up it was always a derivative of a specific entree. So it's a side, but not a side in the sense that it can be paired with lots of other entrees and definitely not an independent entree.
