You eat gumbo with a fork? No.

Soups you eat with a spoon, stews you eat with a fork.

I eat pot roast with a fork, is it a stew too?

So everything eaten with a spoon is soup, and everything eaten with a fork is stew. Got it!

I don’t know about you, baw, but a chicken, rabbit or meatball strew (fricassee) is something I shovel into my mouth with a spoon.

It's much more a stew than a soup. Soups are thinner

Depends on the gumbo. My gumbo is ticc ticc. A stew. You get meat in every bite.

That said, I really enjoy a thinner soup-like gumbo too. It’s just not what I make.

But keep in mind the OP. He’s a contrarian douchebag.

It is only gumbo if it includes Okra.

Otherwise it is a soup or stew.

I mean you eat it in a bowl with a spoon, is it worth arguing over??? it's not like it changes anything from a practical standpoint.

If you call it something else - stew, goulash, admixture, slop, or even put it in a category of its own - what does it change? Not much.

Thinner ones are soups; thicker ones are stews.

The only reason this is a “debate” is that every subculture is obsessed with being different and recoils at the idea that their special thing(s)can be categorized under a larger heading. There’s no shame, at all, in acknowledging that gumbo can be categorized under a general culinary heading. It’s still special.

And yes, a bowl of cereal in milk is a soup and a hotdog is a sandwich.

What's wrong with saying gumbo is gumbo and allowing folks to fight over everything else they can find to argue over? It's not like there aren't many other things out there for folks to get upset over.

This is not Nam! There are rules and definitions.

Okra...or when okra wasn't available you added filé to thinken it up so you had a "filé gumbo."

There is no such thing as a Ceasar Salad with ranch dressing.
