Do buffets continue to exist in these "Un-Certain Times"

I would guess the Chinese Buffet restaurant I go to 90% or more of the customers get the buffet.
When we re-open do the buffets adapt and add a server that piles up your plate? You can't have everybody using the same serving utensils at the buffet.
What's the future of the Golden Corrals, Chinese, Casino, Seafood, Pizza, Hotel Breakfast Buffets....

Had this conversation this past weekend. The consensus (socially distanced of course) was no, they will not exist as they once were.

Friend,
This is a great question and I look forward to reading all the responses. I haven’t really missed Golden Corral as I expected. I think all buffets will trend down, but I think GC stays in business.

Well the virus can’t be transferred to food so there’s that.

The really weird one to imagine is no more buffet/prepared foods at Whole Foods.

It can transfer to food, but eating it is okay.
I saw an epidemiologist say in a Wa. Post article don’t worry about take out food because you can eat the virus and not get sick. It works by getting in your airways.
But he said the container the food came in does have a low risk of transferring it to your hands, which you then touch to your face, and you’re dead. So unbox the food, then wash hands, and eat.
The tongs for the chicken at Golden Corral or China Bear would not be ideal to touch. And you couldn’t go wash up and get back to the table without touching some other nasty doorknob, chair, etc. And you know you’re gonna scratch your nose. It’s itching right now.
You could lather up with hand sanitizer at the table, but for buffet food? Just skip it.

My only hope is that the Rona has killed buffets for good. At least one good thing to come from it.

RIP Hugo's Sunday brunch.
Though some would say it died 5-10 years ago.

Friend,
Two problems with this quote:
1. When you eat food, where does the food first go? The mouth. The mouth is part of both the respiratory and gastroenterologic systems. The mouth is also mucosa which allows for absorption of viron among other things. I would certainly throw away food if I knew it was prepared by someone actively shedding the 2019 coronavirus.
2. Although the stomach is a highly acidic atmosphere, which one might assume will destroy the contagion, there seems to be a significant number of cases who present with GI symptoms. Common lab values for Covid19 patients include liver function abnormalities and low albumin, which is produced by the liver. There appears to be a GI component with this virus we do not fully understand.
I am not saying, dear friend, that eating food can transmit the virus. I am saying that we are all in a position of ignorance. To make dogmatic statements like the one in the quote without evidence based research is foolish. Such statements are being shared on TD far more than I would like.

This is abhorrently wasteful and, quite frankly, a very shocking position for someone who touts such moral superiority . I urge you to reconsider this stance for numerous reasons. The biggest of which being the hopeful scenario that you yourself actually contract the virus. This could provide a superb platform for you to document your on afflictions so that others suffering can find peace and courage from your strength and leadership. And in the likely event that you succumb to the disease due to your myriad of preexisting conditions, both physical and mental, your passage to the afterlife will most assuredly grant you the martyrdom that you and mother so desire. In short, go lick a corona covered styrofoam container.
Best,
L. Balls

The Asians sure are hurting. Soup joints, buffets, nail and massage parlors...

I'm going to venture a WAG and say that yeah, buffets in small restaurants will return as before, and yeah people will go to them and serve themselves as they did before - these places advertised as "all you can eat" for a reason, and their clientele dined there for a reason -
