This is ridiculous and a reason for me to not go back to a restaurant. Another ridiculous add on that ticks me off are mandatory plate sharing fees. My wife and I went to a nice place recently, ordered $200 worth of apps, cocktails, and a bottle of wine. We split a $50 entree and they were taken aback when I asked about the absurdity of a $5 add-on for sharing the entree.

Many restaurants/cafes outside of the US do charge a fee for dining in.

As a former bartender of many years, this would piss me off to no end, especially if the restaurant pocketed the "prep fee" instead of actually distributing it to the staff.

The way I look at it is that if a guest sees this unexpected fee on his or her bill, said guest MAY assume that gratuity isn't necessary, or that it can be lower than what is considered the industry standard. In that case, the restaurant can profit while the server/bartender can go frick himself, I guess.

The more shocking part is, no one around here talks about it. Of course, they may have never even looked at the bill.

Sorry I hurt your boo-boo with my comment. I also enjoy going out to eat sometimes. That was not my point.

When I do go to a restaurant, I want to experience something different and unique, not a common cut of beef that I can cook to my liking easily at home.

If that's the standard that has to be satisfied for you to go out to eat, I guess you don't do it very often. I'm not sure where you live, but not too many areas offer continually available "different and unique" experiences.

I just find it odd that a guy can't enjoy a nice steakhouse experience every so often with his friends or a date because "he can make a steak cheaper at home". You do you though.
